The Eastern Grey Kangarooo Controlled Native Species Management Plan is endangering the safety and lives of the public with no public notification and firearms being used at any time.
wlcg_banner1
The Government’s ongoing illegal violent mass slaughter of the Kangaroos is not for Conservation purposes, they are for development and construction purposes driving protected native wildlife (flora and fauna) to extinction and destroying the Bush Capital.
It is ironic that the ACT Chief Minister has just introduced the words ‘Bush Capital’ onto ACT vehicle number plates and yet allows the ongoing illegal status and killing of native Eastern Grey Kangaroos etc, and the ongoing destruction of the Bush Capital for further developments and unaffordable constructions for trams etc. causing hardships and poverty to the ACT residents.
wlcg_banner1
Lowland grasslands and woodlands still contain predators causing the Kangaroo population to be weakened and being driven to extinction with the additional inhumane infertility program and mass violent killing of the Kangaroos by the Government with their mismanagement of the Kangaroos.
wlcg_banner1
Predators: additional recently introduced Spotted-tailed and Eastern Quolls, Raptors, domestic animals, domestic pets, the Government are the worst predators, farmers, hunters, road strikes, foxes, commercial industry that was used at Googong Dam, construction sites, loss of habitat for construction of unnecessary trams that the ACT can’t afford and is costing the ACT more homelessness rating the ACT the highest in homelessness in Australia, etc, unnecessary housing development just building more empty houses that no one can afford to buy or rent all destroying our bush capital and destroying in what would be a multi billion dollar tourist industry in the ACT by wiping out and driving our Kangaroos to extinction.

In 2008 I proposed a City Kangaroo Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, along William Slim Dr, Ginenderra Dr, and Baldwin Drive, submitting a map to show an educational public viewing glassed in Wildlife Hospital, viewing platforms, separate areas for wildlife rehabilitation for sick, injured, orphaned Kangaroos and other wildlife, kiosk, Laboratory, Emergency Centre, Recovery Room that would have raised a multi billion dollar revenue in the tourist industry for the ACT and save our protected native EGK’s and other wildlife.  http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-all-the-kangaroos.html

Instead of spending taxpayers money on the Kangaroo Park and Wildlife Sanctuary to raise a multi billion dollar revenue for the ACT, the Government has irresponsibly continued to abuse taxpayers money on fraudulent reports on Kangaroos, unnecessarily killing Kangaroos driving them to extinction, inhumane infertility program driving them to extinction, illegally arresting and locking up innocent people and dragging innocent people through Court, viciously harassing, bullying and defaming innocent people, your experts, etc., when it has always been the Government breaking all the laws, https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2015/04/20/wildlife-carers-group-news-21415-stop-the-violent-roo-kill-invite-to-book-launch-animal-justice-party-more/,
Canberra kangaroo cull in 2015 was unlawful, judge says, instead of working with the independent experts, listening and stopping the killing.

Last year’s, 2016, was the biggest cull since 2011, with 1989 animals violently and inhumanely shot and another 800 pouch young violently killed.

I have sent 3 petitions to the Government to stop the Kangaroo killing currently raising 8,805 signatures of support in total for the Government to stop the Kangaroo killing, as of 19/3/17, all inappropriately ignored.

I am submitting these 3 petitions again to the Government in this submission to stop your persecution, fraudulent reports, mismanagement and misrepresentation, your false manipulated population figures, and killing of Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

I have inspected the Kangaroos that are becoming quite weak due to the ongoing mismanagement of the Government through mass killing and the infertility program, seeing separated Joeys through the additional kangaroo proof fencing that has gone up around the ACT without any consultation with the public, that the Government have constructed to make it easier for the Government to trap and kill the Kangaroos not leaving any escape for them.

041312_1248_SULPHURCRES11.jpg

It is recommended that these fences be removed and replaced with wildlife corridors instead.
bntscrueltyillegalherdingcrashing
Fences are not necessary that cause injuries with wildlife getting injured as they get caught up in them when fleeing causing prolonged agonising death to them, and when there are fenceless technology around using sensors.  Cars are now fitted with sensors to avoid collisions, shu roos can be installed.

2015 ACT Government violent killing. Vet report says this Kangaroo was hit by a vehicle and then stabbed to death. Only the Government had access to drive around inside this complex.

Sensor deterrents can also be used as a form of an anklet or bracelet for cyclists, joggers, otherwise avoid the areas where the Kangaroos are and give way to them.
wlcg_banner1
Kangaroos are unnaturally isolated from each other due to this Government’s misrepresentation and mismanagement of kangaroos.  Joeys separated from their mob, only small mobs can be seen that quickly disappear due to the Government already exercising their ongoing illegal killing of protected native wildlife and already using this controlled native species management plan as multiple firearm shots are heard.

2014 UNLAWFUL, VIOLENT GOVERNMENT KILLING OF A JOEY

It has been scientifically proven that by fencing in Kangaroos that it showed that the Kangaroos save our endangered species and save their habitat through their gentle grazing and natural fertilisation stimulating the regrowth.  It has been scientifically proven that the areas where the Kangaroos were fenced out of, the habitat and the endangered species all died because it lacked the Kangaroos gentle grazing and natural fertilisation that promoted the regrowth of the endangered native species habitat.  This applies to all native species. (Ref: Don Fletcher – TAMS Senior Ecologist)

It has also been scientifically proven that the Government has no science in their killing of Kangaroos, that it is all science fiction.

It is highly recommended that all the fencing be removed, all the killing and the infertility program to be stopped to allow the natural stimulation of regrowth caused by Kangaroos all over the ACT that also assist in keeping the fire hazard down.

2008 BNTS Kangaroo cruelty

The Government has always continued the killing after their own killing by placing poison baits in all the nature reserves, and then putting hooved cattle and sheep that cause irreparable damage to the biomass and endangered species named by the Government, into the nature reserves to graze down the grass to prevent a fire hazard, which the soft footed Kangaroos, that don’t cause any damage to the biomass, do if they are not misrepresented, not mismanaged, and not killed.  This is after all suppose to be the bush capital and not the farmers capital.

First the Eastern Quolls were released where the Bettongs were fenced in at Mulligans Flat so that the Government can abuse and waste more taxpayers money and get the Bettongs violently killed by the small Eastern Quolls, where they have no escape.
041312_1254_SULPHURCRES14.jpg
Then the Government released the larger species Spotted-tailed Quolls in Mulligans Flat as well to abuse and waste more taxpayers money so that the Spotted-tailed Quolls can kill the smaller species Eastern Quolls and Bettongs, all of them fenced in with no escape, turning Mulligans Flat into one big violent blood bath.
041312_1254_SULPHURCRES13.jpg
This is ongoing abuse and waste of taxpayers money for these programs.
wlcg_banner1

These Quolls that are new predators for our Macropods are also killing our Kangaroos and their Joeys that are already also being driven to extinction with ongoing violent killing illegally committed all year round by the Government and their infertility program that are all weakening the species driving them to extinction.
The Kangaroos are not responsible for killing off bettongs and bandicoots, the Government is through their ongoing misrepresentation and mismanagement of all wildllife.

With the amount of taxpayers money that the Government has abused on all of the above, the Government could’ve constructed 3 of my proposed Kangaroo Parks and Wildlife Sanctuary around the ACT by now.

The Code of Practice is in breach of the Animal Welfare Act violently bashing Joeys to death.  The shooters are also in breach of the Code of Practice who always have mis shots that means that adult roos are also tortured to death.  These killings are nothing but a violent blood sport introducing and educating violence in the ACT that is completely unacceptable and inappropriate.  http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/its-a-massacre-the-cruel-fate-for-pouch-young-in-canberras-kangaroo-cull-20170209-gu8zqi.html,

2014 UNLAWFUL, VIOLENT GOVERNMENT KILLING OF A JOEY

This poor Joey was bashed, stabbed, and then while suffering from all the injuries, was buried alive, that then died from asphyxiation, as shown by the Vet Report.

Because of the ongoing misrepresentation and mismanagement, and fraudulent reports repeatedly written about our Eastern Grey Kangaroos by the Government that is then illegally sent out to the media by the Government, it is not recommended that the EGK’s status be amended to a controlled native species under the Nature Conservation Act 2014, and that the controlled native species status be immediately removed from the Nature Conservation Act 2014, and under these conditions, it is highly recommended that the Government abort the Controlled Native Species Management Plan.
wlcg_banner1
Furthermore, it is highly recommended that the Government also abort the no kangaroo policy in the ACT and provide full term rehabilitation of all sick, injured, orphaned Eastern Grey Kangaroos through their Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence.
It is highly recommended that the 3 Petitions above be actioned to immediately stop the Kangaroo killing, to save the rest of our native wildlife, and to stop the violence.

FRANKIE SEYMOUR’S PETITION STARTED IN 2014 UPDATED 2015 ON STOP KANGAROO KILLING.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government has announced yet another slaughter of eastern grey kangaroos (EGKs) on its own nature reserves in the winter of 2015.

The government claims, without any coherent supporting evidence, that kangaroo grazing is a threat to the very ecosystems of which kangaroos have been an integral part for around five million years. The government continues to slaughter these creatures, despite having done no work to monitor or evaluate the impact or effectiveness of the killing program.

As well as being an ecological disaster, the slaughter causes immeasurable suffering to the animals. Adults that do not die instantly from the first shot are stabbed and clubbed to death, or escape to die slowly of their wounds. Even the survivors often injure themselves in their panic, or die on the roads trying to escape, or live to suffer the emotional distress and disruption to the mob’s social structure. Pouch young and young at foot are bludgeoned to death or left to starve.

In his response to this petition in 2014, Minister Shane Rattenbury implies that eastern grey kangaroos are a threat to species such as Grassland Earless Dragons, the Striped Legless Lizard, Perunga Grasshoppers, Coorooboorama Raspy Crickets and Ginninderra Peppercress. At the Administrative Reviews of 2013 and 2014, this claim was shown to be completely untrue. In fact, in an adjoining reserve just across the NSW border, where kangaroos are never culled, several of these species are recovering far more quickly than on the ACT reserves where massive kangaroos culling is conducted every year. The government’s own ecologist admitted that the government’s assertions about kangaroos being a threat to vulnerable species were just “PR”.

Rattenbury asserts that “critical conservation areas are under threat from overgrazing by kangaroo populations, which leads to a deterioration in the quality of the grasslands. This in turn puts pressure on the species that rely on this habitat”.  In fact, the ACT government has consistently failed to produce any evidence that kangaroos (other than in captive situations) ever have overgrazed any area. The evidence shows that these animals manage their own populations without human intervention. Overgrazing in Australia is the sole preserve of introduced animals, such as sheep and cattle, which damage the fragile, shallow soils with their heavy bodies, low grazing and hard hooves.

Rattenbury asserts that “conditions in the ACT region are very favourable for Eastern Grey Kangaroos, contributing to an extremely high kangaroo population. Eastern Grey Kangaroos are the most numerous species of macropod in Australia, and their conservation status is not threatened.” Many ecology experts who have actually studied the population dynamics of eastern grey kangaroos consider their numbers to be in steep decline and deep trouble, both in the ACT region and throughout their range.

Rattenbury asserts that “the numbers to be culled have been based on scientific kangaroo counts in each location. This has been compared to the sustainable carrying capacity for each area that ACT Government ecologists have established by taking into account the habitat requirements of grassland dependent animals and plants.” Independent ecology experts have disputed (1) the government’s models for determining the sustainable kangaroos carrying capacity of reserves, (2) their methods for counting them, and (3) their models for estimating actual numbers. The government is well aware of this expert criticism of their calculations.

Rattenbury notes that “the ACT Government has since undertaken a peer review of how cull numbers are determined, which supported the ACT Government’s continuation of kangaroo management activities this year.” This so-called peer review has itself been peer-reviewed, most unfavourably, by a retired CSIRO plant scientist with vast experience in evaluating peer reviews.

Rattenbury asserts that “The conservation cull will be conducted according to a strict Code of Practice that has the endorsement of all relevant authorities including the RSPCA.” In fact, Rattenbury has rejected the Code of Practice prepared and recommended by his own Animal Welfare Advisory Committee in favour of the “national” code of practice which provides a lowest common denominator model intended as a baseline for states to their develop their own codes of practice.

In 2012, at least one of the culled kangaroos was found to have been shot, stabbed and bludgeoned before dying of suffocation and/or blood loss. In 2014, the government’s own expert witness admitted that, during each cull, an entire generation of young at foot are routinely left orphaned to starve or otherwise die without adult protection.

STOP THE VIOLENT KANGAROO KILLING AND LIES
FURTHER UPDATES BELOW: My apologies for WordPress who have compressed most of these reports by removing paragraphs, spaces etc and unfortunately have reformatted my original properly formatted reports.  I have attempted to tidy up this report by adding more photos and our banner. I have updated the kangaroo numbers and charges against the government to include 2015 unlawful violent kill since writing these reports including adding more photos.   Unfortunately the unlawful violent slaughter did go ahead in 2015 commencing 30 April 2015-7 July 2015 – 1700+701 Joeys=2401 violently killed by the ACT Government annual kill, that does not include the other 93 permits handed out all year round or the infertility program that is preventing breeding, weakening the kangaroo species, driving them to extinction.
2015 ACT Government violent killing. Vet report says this Kangaroo was hit by a vehicle and then stabbed to death. Only the Government had access to drive around inside this complex.

2015 ACT Government violent killing. Vet report says this Kangaroo was hit by a vehicle and then stabbed to death. Only the Government had access to drive around inside this complex as this poor Kangaroo desperately tries to escape the shooters by trying to crawl under the fence after they hit this protected native Eastern Grey Kangaroo.

In 2015 the ACT Government authorised the slaughter of at least 25772 Kangaroos across the Territory. Most of these were to be killed on farms because farmers incorrectly believe that native Kangaroos compete for pasture with introduced livestock. But 5000 of the 25772 were to be killed by the government’s own hired guns on public reserves. Kangaroos maintain a healthy well balanced eco system.

In 2014 the ACAT Legal action against the government exposed that the government’s own ecologist admitted that the government’s assertions about kangaroos being a threat to vulnerable species were just “PR”, and that its claim that killing kangaroos will benefit biodiversity generally is based on a simplistic assumption that more biomass (vegetation) is better for biodiversity than the diversity of vegetation achieved by kangaroo grazing.  The TAMS Senior Ecologist had already researched the fact that the vegetation in the fenced off areas where the Kangaroos were kept out of had died because the vegetation actually needs the Kangaroos general grazing in order to survive and thrive.  The vegetation in the fenced off areas where the soft footed Kangaroos were allowed to continue their gentle grazing survived and thrived.

I have over 8000 signatures, adding up all the signatures on all 3 petitions that is more than enough signatures for this government to grant all of my requests.  This ACT Government have absolutely no respect for what the majority of the community want with the ACT Government continuing to abuse taxpayers money to commit their unlawful violence, lies etc.  The taxpayers have not given the ACT Government permission to use their money to kill the Kangaroos.   Only a small minority of 39% supported the government, government dept TAMS and the rspca in the kangaroo killing, while the majority of 56% OPPOSED the government, government dept and the rspca in their unlawful violent kangaroo killing, while 5% were unsure, please click on this link: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2012/09/01/canberra-times-final-kangaroo-killing-poll-results-closed-25512/.

The unlawful entry and stealing of my wildlife from my property by tams, the rspca and the police occurred as a result of me taking the Conservator of Flora and Fauna to court for the unlawful violent killing of the kangaroos/animal cruelty in 2012, to stop the unlawful violent killing and to have the Acts and policies that govern these policies changed. This action against me was more abuse of taxpayers money and vexatious by the government.
TAMS, Marg Peachey, who has now started up her own wildlife group as President that would be affiliated with TAMS, is a TAMS Government wildlife group, and is affiliated with the RSPCA with the same RSPCA mobile number, and the RSPCA are not fit to work with or take and have/keep any animals, and are not fit to be writing up Acts and Policies on them either. Marg Peachey now employed by TAMS, formerly RSPCA Wildlife Manager mistreats animals throwing them around as though they were objects, and is more interested in removing native wildlife from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence that she hates, who also misguides with her training who also teaches mishandling of animals.  This corrupt government, government departments and the RSPCA abused more taxpayers money, by raiding me, defamed me with vicious lies to get me out of the way while I fought back for vindication and for the protection and safety of our wildlife, so that Marg Peachey could start up her own TAMS Government wildlife group as well as what the above paragraph states, for taking legal action against TAMS, and so that they can continue to tell lies about the Kangaroos and keep on unlawfully killing them.
The ACT Government, TAMS, and the RSPCA have abused more taxpayers money to allow Marg Peachey to start up another wildlife group, when they already had my established group that saves taxpayers money since we are all volunteers.  I have long term expertise and knowledge of over 30 years in wildlife. I had to stop Marg Peachey from removing protected native Brush-tail Possums and protected native Currawongs from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence while she was the RSPCA Wildlife Manager, purely because she hated them.  I had to seize back a magpie that needed surgery from Marg Peachey while she was the RSPCA Wildlife Manager because all Marg wanted to do was to kill it .
230415 Section 7 of Wildlife Rehab Licence Sick diseased or injured animals must receive appropriate treatment...003
The taxpayers and voters have spoken in my 3 petitions and have demanded that Marg Peachey has her Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence revoked/cancelled.  This 20/4/2015 report/news has been added to all 3 petitions as confirmation on our demands. Marg Peachey’s TAMS Government wildlife group will have to be deregistered to prevent unlawful and unnecessary killing and extinction of wildlife.

'Sarah' EGK in doco
On 7/7/13 I was prevented from personally helping a Joey, as animal cruelty continued by TAMS and was committed by a TAMS ranger named Grant who went out and saw a Joey in Oxley that was mauled by 2 roaming dogs. He failed to sedate the Joey and immediately provide the Joey with veterinary treatment for the injuries, and shock, and to ensure that the Joey was rehabilitated by a responsible experienced person, such as myself, prior to release. Instead, he told a resident that if the Joey didn’t hop away by 8/7/13 that he would kill it. This is completely unacceptable and unlawful.
230415 Section 7 of Wildlife Rehab Licence Sick diseased or injured animals must receive appropriate treatment...003
According to the caller, the dogs dragged the Joey across the road, and was therefore injured and suffering myopathy (shock).
The callers phoned me being dissatisfied with the TAMS Ranger Grant’s non action, and asked me to help them to help the Joey. I phoned a rescuer and asked him to sedate the Joey, rescue it, and to immediately get it to have medical treatment and rehabilitation. The ranger then phoned me and left me a threatening message demanding that I phone him back, that he had already attended the site where the Joey was, and that I was to stay away and leave the Joey where it was, to suffer. I refused to phone Grant back.

TAMS and CSIRO were fighting over an endangered Major Mitchell Cockatoo that was someone’s pet that had escaped. THEIR FIGHT WAS OVER who was going to torture this poor bird to death by draining the blood out of it while it was still alive and conscious, after TAMS seized it from a wildlife carer who was happy to keep the bird as his pet if the owner didn’t come forward. THIS WILDLIFE CARER IS NOW DECEASED. TAMS violently kill everything. No wildlife can be given to TAMS OR THE RSPCA. THE PUBLIC DO NOT HAND IN WILDLIFE SO THAT TAMS AND THE RSPCA CAN TORTURE THEM TO DEATH OR FEED THEM TO SNAKES, RAPTORS AND OTHER CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS.

ANIMAL CRUELTY WARNINGS IGNORED BY MICHAEL LINKE. DROWNING IN THE SLURRY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE EITHER AND IS ALSO COMMITTING ACTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY:
Under my conditions of my licence K8464 No.4, it stated that the animals shall not be sold….., however, the RSPCA is selling the animals, adopting out animals is the same as selling them, the RSPCA are making a profit from wildlife, including mine that they stole from me, and what they couldn’t sell, adopt out and profit from, the RSPCA killed. The RSPCA have contravened other conditions of their licence as well as in failing to provide veterinary treatment and care, including surgery when needed, who instead kill.
230415 Section 7 of Wildlife Rehab Licence Sick diseased or injured animals must receive appropriate treatment...003
Condition 28 of the licence K8464 is requesting that: “The Wildlife Foundation shall maintain and submit to the Conservator of Flora and Fauna: 1) A current list of names and addresses of members of the Foundation and 2) Records of all animals received by the Foundation by June 30 each year. These records shall contain: 1. Date and where animal found 2. Name and address of person delivering animal 3. Species and sex of animal/s 4. Date animal received 5.Treatment provided and 6. Date of animal’s release, or name and address of person animal delivered to and date delivered.”
This means that my licence should still be valid and extended/a continuance which can be done under special conditions and backdated to 2008/2009.
Wildlife Carers Group Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence K8464 conditions 27 and 28

Wildlife Carers Group Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence K8464 conditions 27 and 28

Since TAMS were requesting condition 28 information from another group when they falsely gave condition 28 of the licence as not being complied by, and as their reason for not issuing a renewal, even though I still complied with that condition, and since condition 28 is not referring to Wildlife Carers Group, then the licence K8464 still has to be valid if they want to continue to falsely deny that they received everything as requested.
I was advised by the court to ignore condition 28, however TAMS have been using condition 28 not to renew my licence, to defame me to my carers, vets, etc, which they cannot do.
The only condition I contravened on the licence K8464 was in condition No.28 by giving TAMS a list of vets and carers names, records, etc when condition 28 was asking the Wildlife Foundation to give them their list of vets and carers names, records etc. All of TAMS evidence shows that I was bullied and threatened by TAMS in giving them that information in contravention to condition 28 of my licence which I gave under duress and is therefore inadmissible in court.

I repeatedly advised the licensing officers that they have also erred in the licence by naming the Wildlife Foundation which they repeatedly ignored, as they repeatedly ignore everything else. Therefore, as I have repeatedly stated, this is all departmental error by a dysfunctional department. Neither myself nor the animals can be allowed to suffer the consequences, or hold me and the animals responsible for TAMS repeated errors and contravention to the Act, the Animal Welfare Act and the Code of Practice etc. any further.
I believe that I have suffered enough intimidation, torment, bullying (upto $600,000 fine), humiliation, degradation, defamation, vicious harassment and violated by these departments and the RSPCA over false allegations, etc for over a long period of time that dates back to 2004 when I first applied for the Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence.

Note condition 27 doesn’t allow full term rehabilitation for Eastern Grey Kangaroos (EGK), showing the ACT Government’s hatred for the EGK’s, the only state with this policy.  The Canberra Chronicle – TAMS Ranger Brett McNamara Our Bush Capital – article Restoring Balance ‘An intricate web of life’, p12, 21/4/15, is an intricate web of lies. The ACT Government’s Kangaroo killing is driven by hatred and lies, and NOT by Science. Science tells the ACT Government to leave the Kangaroos alone because without the soft footed macropods and their gentle grazing to stimulate native vegetation growth along with their natural fertilisation through their faeces, the vegetation will die. The ACT Government is driving the Eastern Grey Kangaroos to extinction with their over killing, lies and mismanagement. The strong large males and strong healthy females are targeted destroying their strong healthy gene pools, weakening the species. On top of the 31+ killing permits, predators, the ACT Government is also sterilising the Kangaroos to completely wipe them right out and to speed up the process of driving them to extinction. The ACT Government’s lies about the Kangaroos is encouraging violence who are committing fraud with their false reports. The Kangaroos are not over grazing and there is such a small population left. The kangaroos are not of an abundance. The ACT Government hand out approx. 30 permits a year to land holders to kill the Kangaroos, along with their own annual unlawful killing that would add up to approx. 31 killing permits of protected native wildlife a year. Kangaroos and other macropods predators are dogs, raptors, foxes, snakes, humans, road kills, development/construction, fences, loss of habitat that are keeping the population well below the required population to provide a healthy well balanced eco system. The ACT Government is destroying the habitat and driving the Eastern Grey Kangaroos, other macropods, reptiles, insects and other wildlife to extinction through poisoning – baits and sprays, unlawful killing throughout the year, construction of roads and buildings, driving quad bikes, heavy machinery, and trucks throughout reserves, digging up the reserves for trenches etc. who are destroying the Bush Capital. After each ACT Government killing, they then spread poisonous baits throughout all the reserves to finish off the last remaining Kangaroos and other native wildlife. The ACT Government is driving our Kangaroos and other native wildlife flora and fauna to extinction. Updated from top to bottom with more relevant photos to show the extent of the ACT Government’s and the RSPCA’s violence and lies. The ACT Government are weakening the species by targeting the large males and strong healthy females that hold the strong gene pools.

It is common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia and Tasmania, with a local population in Perth (Western Australia), initiated from aviary releases, that is now found in the ACT as well due to habitat loss. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas.  Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. The Rainbow Lorikeet mostly forages on the flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar and pollen, but also eats fruits, seeds and some insects. The eggs of the Rainbow Lorikeet are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow limb of a eucalypt tree. Both sexes prepare the nest cavity and feed the young, but only the female incubates the eggs.

GREYHOUND RACING CRUELTY UPDATE: Racing Queensland has banned six Greyhound trainers for life and suspended 27 trainers from the industry over live-baiting and 14 people have been arrested on 53 charges, including 37 of serious animal cruelty. The inquiry’s report is due before June. Inquiry has been expanded. https://au.news.yahoo.com/…/qld-greyhound-inquiry-given-wi…/ After all of my correspondence to the Ministers demanding  the ban of Greyhound racing,  https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/wildlife-carers-group-news-wildlife-carers-group-goes-to-africa-warningprotein-from-china-used-in-animal-and-baby-formula-ban-greyhound-racing-25215/.

Here are Questions and Answers in the Legislative Assembly for the ACT on Greyhound racing-live baiting on 18-19 March 2015: ‘MR SMYTH: My question is to the Minister for Racing and Gaming, Minister, on 17 February you described the reports on live baiting in the greyhound racing industry as “truly shocking” and said that you had ordered the commission to investigate the matter further, Minister, have you ordered the commission to investigate this matter?  If yes, when? If no, when will you order this investigation, and will you table the terms of reference? MS BURCH: I have had discussions with the commissioner about this.  It is my understanding that he has spoken with the greyhound club or some of his officials have visited the site.  One of the key questions I had was: do any of the trainers or owners that were recognised in that Four Corners report have connections here? It is my understanding one trainer was identified in that report that raced here two or three years ago. This is something the commission will have an eye to over time.  I am happy to bring advice, as this is something the public has a strong interest in.  I know many members in this Assembly have had a  lot of correspondence damning the practice, which was absolutely disgraceful.  I have confidence that the greyhound industry here abides by all the integrity that the code of conduct of the industry requires. MADAM SPEAKER: A supplementary question, Mr Smyth. MR SMYTH: Minister, when you directed the Gambling and Racing Commission to make inquiries as to whether interstate trainers who use live baiting had operated in the ACT, what were the outcomes? Will you be issuing a report from the review that is being conducted? MS BURCH: I think I indicated in my first answer that there was one trainer identified that was here once.  But I will get an update, and I am quite happy to bring back, probably tomorrow, at the end of question time, some information about where that is up to.  Will I be issuing a report on it?  I had not planned to, but I think a statement in the Assembly tomorrow, following question time, with an update, would suffice. MADAM SPEAKER: A supplementary question, Mr Doszpot. MR DOSZPOT: MINISTER, HAVE YOU WRITTEN TO YOUR INTERSTATE COUNTERPARTS TO PRIORITISE THE ISSUES OF ANIMAL ABUSE IN THE GREYHUND RACING INDUSTRY IN YOUR NEXT MEETING WITH THEM? WHEN DID YOU DO THIS? WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE? MS BURCH: Yes, I have written. Tomorrow, when I bring the advice, I am quite happy to table a copy of that letter.  The meeting was actually scheduled for sometime in May.  Advice has come through to my office today that has been deferred.  So unfortunately, I will not have a chance to have a face-to-face discussion with my colleagues on that because the meeting has been bumped to no fixed date in the future. MADAM SPEAKER: A supplementary question, Mr Doszpot. MS BURCH: I am confident, and the advice to me is, that there is no baiting-absolutely no baiting-here in the ACT. But, as I have said, I am quite happy to come back with an updated bit of advice tomorrow.’ Cont’d – March 19: ‘MS BURCH: Yesterday, in regard to greyhounds there were a number of questions from those opposite.  While the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission is responsible for the regulation of gambling activities, the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club, under the auspices of Greyhounds Australasia, is responsible for the conduct of greyhound racing and the registration of owners and training. In December 2013 the government signed an MOU with the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club so that we can maintain strong integrity in relation to the code of conduct and the discharge of their duties.  The commission has been working with the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club to ascertain whether any identified or banned owners or trainers from other jurisdictions have attended race meetings held by the club.  It has also initiated inspections of the venue and attended race meetings and training sessions to monitor that. The commission has ascertained that one trainer currently under investigation in New South Wales previously raced in the ACT, back in 2013, and that person is currently suspended in New South Wales, pending an investigation.  Earlier in March this year the commission then received further advice that one suspended Victorian trainer had raced in the ACT.  The Greyhound Racing Club have advised that that trainer had attended cup meetings but there is a watch on that future activity. Racing Queensland announced that an additional 23 trainers have been suspended, and the Canberra Racing Club are looking to see if there is any connection back here to Canberra, but nothing as yet.  The commission is continuing to liaise with the Greyhound Racing Club, and no complaints have been received by the commission in relation to live baiting in the territory. There was a question over letters.  I am quite happy to table the letters that I have written to my counterparts in regard to greyhound racing.  I present the following paper: Greyhound Racing Industry Standards-ABC’s Four Corners program- Correspondence to State and Territory Ministers for Racing, dated 2 March 2015.’

TRAGIC DEATH OF BERANI SUMATRAN TIGER AT NATIONAL ZOO AND AQUARIUM 1st photo 27/1/2015- taken by Nora Preston, 2nd photo 26/1/2014 – me feeding the Tiger – We enjoyed visiting Berani at the National Zoo and Aquarium (NZ&A) and will certainly miss the presence of this beautiful Tiger in the future. Heartbreaking news of the death of Berani, died on Monday 20/4/15.  NZ&A are still waiting for the autopsy to find out the cause of death after he suffered for a couple of weeks. SUMATRAN TIGER (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is the smallest and a rare tiger subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was classified as critically endangered by IUCN in 2008 as the population was estimated at 441 to 679. The actual population maybe as low as 400 that are left in the wild with a dwindling population. https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/…/wildlife…/ http://www.canberratimes.com.au/…/the-national-zoo-mourns-t…

N-acetylcarnosine, a dipeptide found in muscle and nerve cells, can help maintain protein integrity in the lens and is being studied in eye drop form for treatment of cataracts. It seems to work well in dogs, but according to Robert Abel Jr., M.D., a Delaware-based ophthalmologist and author of The Eye Care Revolution, (Kensington, 2004) the results of human studies to date have been variable and unpredictable. New formulations may prove more reliable and effective. Ref: Dr Andrew Weil, MD

BAN THE TRAWLERS IN AUSTRALIA I’ve been posting on Greg Hunt’s and Tony Abbott’s Facebook and Twitter pages for them to STOP THE TRAWLERS AND TURN THEM BACK – BAN ALL TRAWLERS, after the Geelong Star arrived and docked at Albany port in WA.  However, they did not listen to me or to hundreds of thousands of other people, and allowed the super trawler to fish that has now killed 4 dolphins and 2 seals on his first day of fishing at Tasmania and Victorian waters.  It is not acceptable to allow these trawlers into Australian waters.  They are destructive and violent in their methods of catch and drive our native marine and fresh water life to extinction: https://www.facebook.com/stopthetrawler/photos/a.256369554551712.1073741831.252738184914849/374863562702310/?type=1&theater. 4 dolphins and 2 seals have died in the first two weeks of the Geelong Star factory trawler operating in Australian waters. This was predictable, but it is not acceptable. SHARE THIS and TELL Prime Minister Turnbull (update with new Prime Minister in September 2015) to #StopThisBoatTone: Phone 02 9977 6411 or message Malcolm.turnbull.mp@aph.gov.au The 95-metre industrial factory trawler the Dirk-Dirk (in Australia, now reflagged as the Geelong Star) has killed four dolphins and two seals on its first fishing trip in Australian waters. Completely unacceptable, no marine life should lose their lives. Trawlers over fish and drive marine life to extinction that will have repercussions on the environment. Turn the trawlers around and send them back from where they came from. You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html . In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10 that has now been removed, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/  don fletcher from tams says thatkangaroos are not the main problem and in fact‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”. This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays. Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored. The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11. Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg  ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows. Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related , so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59. There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

LONG-NECKED TORTOISE.  The Long-necked Tortoise has 4 legs, with clawed webbed feet and does not primarily live in the water.  They walk a fair bit across land and only feed in the water.  The difference between Turtles is that they have flippers and they do live primarily in water.  Turtles only leave the water to lay eggs and then return to the water.

PATTING AND FEEDING A LEOPARD SHARK

PATTING AND FEEDING A TAWNY NURSE SHARK (Nebrius ferrugineus) is a species of carpet shark in the family Ginglymostomatidae and the only extant member of the genus Nebrius. The most remarkable feature of the Tawny nurse shark is its ability to change colour between grey and sandy brown depending on the colour of its surroundings. This is a nocturnal shark that usually forages for food at night and rests under reef overhangs and caves during the day. At night the species feeds on a variety of bottom-dwelling lobsters, crabs, octopus and sea urchins as well as small fish. The females give birth to up to eight live young that have hatched within the uterus. Sharks feel like sandpaper and apparently sandpaper has been made out of shark skin, so make sure you check whether or not the next sandpaper you buy is made from shark skin, if it is, boycott it and don’t buy it. Find sandpaper that is not made from sharks or any other animal products. Don’t put your hands in the shark’s mouth when you are feeding them because you will get bitten as the shark goes for the food, as our personal guide found out.

I attended a meeting where a male person from the Government, Government Department who was a speaker claimed to be an expert in reptiles showing slides of them.  He may have been a Scientist.  He showed a slide of a Long-necked Tortoise and said that they live in the water and are turtles.  The tortoise was standing on land which I pointed out to him.  He angrily said that the tortoise was on land because he put it there to take the photo.  These are the people who don’t know what they are talking about who are lecturing, teaching, training the public in areas that they know absolutely nothing about.  How do these tortoises get run over on the road if they live in the water?  Show me their flippers and I will agree that the Tortoises are Turtles, but of course no one can do that either.

WARNING:  Protein from China used in animal and baby formula.

It is believed that the protein from China used in baby animal formula may be the cause of blindness in soft-furred animals as companies appear to be cost cutting and using inferior products.  Check the formula labels before buying them.  If they have China written on them, avoid them, and test the product for any contamination before using them.

I had this email sent to me asking me to further investigate this matter:

“…I was wondering,  if you have the latest information on Di-Vetelact, our Carers were having problems with animals getting cataracts.

I believe the SHARPE  company was importing Protein from China, which we thought may have been the problem, are you aware if this is still the case.

I have emailed the company, but am not getting a reply.   We have also been warned about Biolac, M100, M 150 seems to be ok but trouble starts with M 200.

My husband and I are elderly 83 and 80 years old and have been rearing joeys for 20 years, Possums, Wallabies and Eastern Greys.

I’m using Wombaroo at the moment, but am not having the same  results, as when I used Divet. Joeys are slower in putting on weight, I am adding baby Farex to each bottle now, which is working, 1/4 tsp each bottle.

Please if you can find the time, will you let me know if Di-Vet is safe again….”

I contacted Sharpe who advised me that they were getting their protein from New Zealand.  When I asked the Sharpe company manager/distributor where New Zealand was getting their protein from, he didn’t know. The problem is that wildlife have no lactose tolerance for cows milk or from any other animal that carries lactose that will kill them and it seems that the wildlife milk formula that we thought were safe do have cows milk powder included in the formula.

When I attempted to investigate Biolac, they didn’t answer my questions and instead sent me 2 threatening letters to gag me rather than trying to resolve the blindness that their product is causing that does not appear to be suitable for soft-furred animals.  As mentioned in the correspondence above, these carers are having problems from M200 Biolac and up. To see the Photos of the effect on joeys eyes caused by Biolac click on this link: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2013/03/16/wildlife-carers-group-news-galah-avoid-biolac-snakes-molonglo-new-tams-minister-more-17313/

It was announced that this same protein from China will be used in baby formula, so check the labels on your baby formula and make sure that the protein from China isn’t on the label, if it is, don’t buy it, it’s not worth the risk.

GREYHOUND RACING CRUELTY USING LIVE PROTECTED NATIVE WILDLIFE AND OTHER LIVE ANIMALS AS BAIT

I judged the short film ‘Maiden’ and discovered the animal cruelty last year while judging the short films entered in the film awards.  Prosecute the greyhound owners, handlers, greyhound clubs, filmmakers of this film, the actors and the possum handler named in the film credits who were involved in tying up a baby possum/joey to a lure that dragged the joey on the ground for the greyhound that was then fed to the greyhound.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they really bashed the greyhound to death as well at the end of the film since greyhounds that don’t perform are tortured to death as well.  Director Stephen Kanaris, Producer Tahnee McGuire, Production Company: Hatch Film watched and filmed a baby possum being strapped to a mechanical lure while the greyhound ran after it. The lure was close to the ground as the possum could be seen being dragged along the ground. The greyhound was then allowed to rip the possum apart. The film was shot in Queensland, outer suburbs of Brisbane, with the filmmakers categorising the film as: “Anger, violence, immigration, isolation, animal cruelty”: http://www.shortfilmcentral.com/film/5449/ Please sign this petition for Animals Australia to shut down the violent Greyhound industry: http://www.greyhoundcruelty.com/?r=54eca134c80e3142479390854eca134c81c3

Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and can offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 90 odd Dingoes, population estimation as of 28-29 August 2011, (since the mismanaged Fraser Island fire by the Qld government, this Dingo population has more than likely dropped dramatically), that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

I have had a busy year in 2014 fighting for wildlife, wildlife habitat and animal welfare starting it off by going out to a NSW Wheat and Sheep farm in a 40 degree heat in January 2014. Animal welfare was a serious issue on this farm that was over stocked with not enough food and water for the amount of sheep on it. We had to drag 2 rams out of the water hole that they were stuck in that had turned into mud, with both of them badly injured. Farmers are not properly prepared to humanely remove livestock that are stuck in their mud holes. The farmer wanted to leave them there to die from their injuries with no water and food, the licks he left there were untouched. I insisted we take them back to the shed where they were hosed down and given water to drink. Vets don’t appear to be called in to treat the injured livestock and to save them. Another ram’s horns were stuck in the fence that we had to rescue. As we drove around the large property and paddocks in the farm Ute, with 3 dogs exposed to the 40 degree heat on the back of the open Ute, dead sheep lay on the ground with mud holes everywhere and the paddocks were dust bowls. He had a few cattle that were looked after a bit better that were kept in a grassed paddock with water. I insisted that he open up the paddock gates with no food or water in them to let the sheep into paddocks where there was food and water. I didn’t expect to see what I did, so I left my camera in the car back by the shed where my lip gloss completely melted, therefore, sorry, no photos. My concerns are that the majority of sheep and cattle farmers and other animal/livestock farmers treat their animals the same way with overcrowding, by overstocking and neglect that results in suffering and a prolonged agonising death to the livestock.

In January, 26/1/14 (Australia Day) https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2014/01/26/wildlife-carers-group-news-happy-australia-day-26114/, and 24 April 2014 we visited the National Zoo and Aquarium (NZ&A) and found that all the animals are very well looked after, clean and loved. All NZ&A photos taken by me on 24/4/14. All photos by NORA PRESTON.

19 May 2014 I attended the annual Voiceless Animal Law Lecture at the ANU that covered the Ag-gag Laws, where criminals who operate commercial agricultural facilities want to be able to continue to mistreat and torture animals to death without being detected and so target the undercover investigators, whistleblowers and journalists who intervene with the violence committed to then stop the violence towards the animals through media coverage. Ag-gag laws want to criminalise the undercover surveillance of their facilities, require that any footage must be turned over to police immediately rather than given to the media and force farm employees to disclose ties to animal protection groups. To learn more about the Ag-gag laws visit http://www.voiceless.org.au/aggag.

Will Potter is an award-winning independent journalist and public speaker based in Washington, D.C. who has written for several publications in animal and environmental law standing in the foreground. https://www.voiceless.org.au/sites/default/files/Abstract280214Final.pdf, In the background to your left is Tara Ward(Animal Lib, & one of the Founder’s of The Animal Defenders Office)

I attended a few days of the ACAT/Tribunal case against TAMS by Animal Liberation in their fight to stop the Kangaroo killing that after a long hard battle they unfortunately lost that still went ahead again in 2014, with laws still being broken with the lies sent out about the Kangaroos by the government in their media releases, deliberately misleading the public and the media, who continue to unlawfully torture our protected native wildlife to death, who are driving them to extinction, destroying the healthy well balanced eco system that the Kangaroos assist in maintaining.

I have assisted others in wildlife matters and have been busy in fighting for a better understanding, proper care and treatment for all of our native wildlife, along with a lot more work that is all too numerous for me to mention. We hope that our suffering wildlife under the ACT government will have a better year in 2015.

I have sent out posts on social media and today sent an email to Greg Hunt attempting to stop and ban the WA drum lines that are inhumanely and unnecessarily used to bait, catch and torture our poor sharks to death by the WA Government and Fisheries Dept. Feel free to write your own letters to Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt to help ban the drum lines and nets:

Good afternoon,

I draw your attention to the recent media release shark-drum-lines-set-off-warnbro-beach-as-hunt-for-tagged-great-white-continues  on WA Government and Fisheries Dept going back on their word to stop baiting innocent sharks that live in the water that is extremely inhumane.  https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/25827930/shark-drum-lines-set-off-warnbro-beach-as-hunt-for-tagged-great-white-continues/.

We ask you to urgently intervene and order the WA Government to remove all drum lines from the water and to leave this tagged shark alone.  We further ask you to urgently ban the use of drum lines and nets in the oceans and to replace them with the Shark Shield that is an electronic device that successfully deters sharks from entering the areas that you want to deem safe for the people.

In 1992 Valerie and Ron Taylor successfully tested the Shark Shield against the Great White Sharks and made the recommendation to remove all of the nets and to replace them with these electronic devices that was quite obviously ignored. Valerie and her now deceased husband (2012) Ron Taylor filmed a documentary to show how the deterrents worked.

I am quoting from the Shark Shield Wikipedia testing for your information with the link below some of the quotes from the report:

“…The original “SharkPOD” was tested for eight years off Dyer Island with mainly great white sharks, and was the first electronic device that was proven successful in deterring sharks when tested by Ron Taylor and Valerie Taylor in 1992 on sharks in Australia and South Africa with positive results—they made a documentary about it called “Shark POD”. Extensive field testing was conducted on the Shark Shield off Neptune Island, South Australia, using the FREEDOM4 and subsequently the FREEDOM7 by renowned wildlife documentary videographer, Ian “Shark” Gordon. Gordon personally tested the effectiveness of the device on a variety of particularly aggressive shark species, including black-tipped reef sharks, mako sharks, and great white sharks, by setting a tuna bait to attract the sharks while he was wearing a Shark Shield, and then videoing their hasty retreat as they approached within meters of the activated device.[8]…

All chondrichthyans have highly sensitive electrical receptors called the “Ampullae of Lorenzini” located in their snouts. These tiny gel filled sacs sense electrical current from prey at very close distances, typically less than one meter. They use these short range sensors when feeding or searching for food. They do not use electrical receptors to track animate objects over long distances; other senses such as audition and olfaction are the primary drivers.[3][4]

Shark Shield devices create an electrical waveform that creates an unpleasant sensation impacting the shark’s ‘Ampullae of Lorenzini’. When the shark comes into proximity of the electrical waveform (a few meters in diameter) it experiences uncontrollable muscular spasms causing it to flee the area.[5][6]

The field is projected from two electrodes, which create an elliptical field that surrounds the user. Both electrodes must be immersed in the water for the field to be created. Research conducted by The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in 2012 estimated the Shark Shield electrical field to be approximately four to five meters in diameter.[7]

While sharks are attracted to electromagnetic pulses produced by potential prey animals, the electronic field emitted by the Shark Shield does not attract sharks to the device and therefore would not increase the risk of attracting sharks to the vicinity of the user. A shark’s sensory organs are acutely sensitive to low-voltage gradients (> 5 nVcm), enabling them to detect very low-frequency electronic fields of between 1–8 Hz at short range, after which the other senses (sight, chemoreception and mechanoreception) aid the shark in capturing its prey.[3][4] The range at which an electronic shark deterrent emits a field that is the equivalent of a prey-like stimulus (approx 1–100 nV/cm) is much further than their short range detection facilitates. Should a shark approach the device, the strength of the electric field will get stronger the closer it gets, and will soon cause the shark extreme discomfort, forcing it to turn away.

Scientific studies modelling this effect show that the output produced at a 3 meter distance is far greater than that produced by prey, and would drop off significantly beyond a 6 m radius, where it would be beyond the short range detection ability of a shark…”.

I look forward to your response and urgent assistance in this matter.

A similar email as above was also sent to Katrina Hodgkinson, NSW Minister for Primary Industries on the Sydney shark nets that catch Stingrays, Sharks and other marine life causing them a prolonged suffering death when they get caught up in the nets. https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/video/watch/25584934/shark-caught-in-bondi-nets/. A response from her Dept was received today 22/12/14, that wasn’t adequate, considering the years that they have had to ban the shark nets and to replace them with electronic devices to deter the sharks from entering certain areas.

Emails have been sent to the Ministers and Prime Minister to stop the trawlers from entering Australia scooping up all our marinelife and driving them to extinction, to stop the dredging and dumping at Abbot Point, etc.

On 1 March 2014 the biting flies began biting my old dog’s ears. 22 December 2014 the nasty flies are still at it when they normally leave by the end of winter. Use Bosistos antibacterial Tea Tree spray to heal and repel flies. I have had to further use personal insect repellant, since the flies return it seems after 10 minutes of spraying. I’m spraying my entire dog with both the Tea Tree spray and personal insect repellant. Make sure you cover up your old dogs eyes before spraying. In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/  don fletcher from tams says thatkangaroos are not the main problem and in fact‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

Canberra: city of animal lovers

Date

July 15, 2012

A small number of Canberra’s animal enthusiasts take their passion to the next level. PHILLIP THOMSON talks to one of them

Nora Preston of the Wildlife Carers Group, at the Callum Brae Nature Reserve, with a rescued female possum. Photo: Graham Tidy

SELF-DESCRIBED protector of animals Nora Preston sends out a media release.

It is about a dog she alleges is being mistreated. It sits on the owner’s verandah and she has taken photos of it and sent them to her mailing list.

”The dog still has not been seized and is still out there in the freezing day and night with no kennel,” she writes.

So I ask her how much trouble she has been in, doing this sort of community activism.

”They abuse you,” she says matter-of-factly, but does not want to say too much more about it.

She only adds: ”When I do that, I’m not on my own. We try to calm them down and just explain to them what they need to do to avoid legal action. Sometimes it takes months.”

Canberra has its fair share of animal lovers.

A small number of them take their animal enthusiasm to the next level, campaigning in the media and sometimes trying as hard as they can to remain anonymous as they break the law.

Outrage often spills into the letters page when there is a kangaroo cull.

Parkwood Farm, which produces eggs in Canberra’s north, was raided by a group of animal rights activists who destroyed equipment in March.

The farm will now switch from battery hen farming to producing cage-free eggs.

However, Preston says she does not endorse law breaking, such as trespass. It would only hurt her ability to get things done the right way, she says, through lobbying.

She does not approve of the damaging of private property. She is more of a supporter of the media campaign, despite the dirty looks she might get from pet owners.

She has no qualms about stepping in and calling the authorities on short notice.

When she saw a man displaying cockatoo wings on the dashboard of his car, she called the police.

”I could just imagine him ripping [the wings] off a live cockatoo,” she says (although there is no proof the man did this).

She also stepped in when she saw a cockatoo being ”stomped on” at Queanbeyan in April. ”That cockatoo is still being rehabilitated, it’s been on antibiotics.”

The bird is now with one of the 20 volunteers in her Wildlife Carers Group.

Preston, the owner of two cats and one dog, started bird watching in the 1970s. After joining the local Wildlife Foundation in the 1980s, she later founded her own organisation, which she says is funded from her own pocket and receives up to 10 calls a day regarding animal welfare matters.

The group doesn’t give names to animals it rescues, although Preston is not against the practice.

The focus is on healing the animals’ wounds until they are released rather than handling them. ”We don’t want to turn them into pets,” she says.

Each year Preston says her organisation receives dozens of calls about snakes in backyards, echidnas on the road and possums in the roof.

A person must be patient to remove a possum from a house.

”They are very territorial,” she says. A possum box must be added to the roof, so the possum can mark it with its smells. When this is done, the box can be put in a nearby tree and the entry into the roof blocked.

Occasionally when her volunteers are called out to possum jobs, the noises in the roof turn out to be rats and mice.

”We don’t deal with those,” she says. ”People have to call the pest controllers.”

If echidnas are picked up from the road they should be placed off the bitumen in the direction they are travelling in. Otherwise, they may become disoriented from where their young, known as puggles, are located.

So how much animal cruelty, whether deliberate or through ignorance, exists in the ACT?

Figures show that the territory’s RSPCA animal welfare inspectors responded to 1100 complaints in the past year. Further action only needed to be taken in less than three per cent of those cases, according to the RSPCA chief executive Michael Linke.

In the past year, six animals in the ACT have been so neglected they have been seized immediately.

Some of the worst cases end up in court.

Two recent cases involved people who allegedly injured their own cats. Inspectors seized the cats and both cases are progressing through the court system.

In another case, inspectors seized an emaciated dog they believed was in imminent risk.

”A case involving a horse also involved failure to provide adequate food to a point of starvation and the horse was seized,” Linke says.

One matter currently before the juvenile court involves a 16-year-old boy who allegedly killed and tortured a number of dogs.

Clearly Preston believes her Wildlife Carers Group has an important part to play in tending to the animals that the RSPCA and other organisations do not get to.

And she believes people and humans are crossing paths more regularly as housing developments continue across the ACT.

This is perhaps most obvious in the ACT government’s kangaroo culls. Preston is passionately opposed to any kangaroo culls, questioning the ACT government’s statement that the shooting is done by experienced marksmen.

Up to 2015 eastern grey kangaroos were killed in the latest cull in May and June.

A survey of 600 Canberrans by Territory and Municipal Services, found 79 per cent were supportive of kangaroo culling under some circumstances and 70 per cent were supportive of culling for conservation of small grassland and woodland animals.

An online poll by The Canberra Times in May found 41 per cent of those polled supported culling.

Ask Preston and she undoubtedly believes most people are against the culls. And she will use all her powers to stop the deaths.

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY

Congratulations to the Competition Winners who correctly identified the species from our New Year Wishes news. Please click on this link to see the photo, scroll down to ‘Competition’ to refresh your memory. The photo showed the parrot’s brightly coloured yellow underside: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/wildlife-carers-group-news-301213/

1st and 2nd photos show 2 male Red-rumped Parrots/Grass Parrots. Only the males have the red rump, therefore the name Red-rumped Parrots given to this species is rather sexist that only identifies the male species. The 3rd photo shows a male Red-rumped/Grass Parrot having a feed on your right hand side beside an immature Crimson Rosella on your left hand side.

Female Grass Parrot on your left, male Red-rumped/Grass Parrot on your right, note that the female is a dull olive green type colour, does not have a yellow coloured underside and is not as brightly coloured as the male.

Drive carefully and give way to our vulnerable wildlife to prevent road fatalities.

There have been a lot of road fatalities and reports of magpies attacking other birds. If you have pet birds in cages, don’t leave them outside unsupervised, they will be attacked and killed through the bars.
