UPDATE ON SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOO NSW ANIMAL CRUELTY

On 19 March 2012 I reported on animal cruelty to a protected native Sulphur-crested Cockatoo in NSW when the offender was attempting to kill the bird by kicking and stomping this protected species to death.

The bird is currently undergoing further assessments with a 2nd vet, having x-rays etc performed.

CORRESPONDENCE WITH CAMPBELL NEWMAN – BATS, DINGOES, DUGONGS, SEA TURTLES, KANGAROOS QLD 26/3/12

On 9 March 2012 I reported on the inhumane slaughters of Queensland’s protected endangered Green sea Turtles and Dugongs, Bats to be inhumanely shot and electrocuted by Qld LNP and sand mining on Stradbroke Island.

Good morning,

Thank you for your response on 12 March 2012 concerning Flying Foxes, Dugongs, Green sea Turtles, and

Congratulations on your big win. Kangaroos, Fraser Island Dingoes and Jennifer Parkhurst were not addressed by you.

The shooting and electrocution of flying-foxes (to prevent crop damage) was outlawed in Queensland as it was proven to be inhumane, and largely ineffective.

Tens of thousands of animals were killed using methods that often left them to die excruciatingly painful deaths. It sometimes takes days for these Australian native animals to die from their injuries.

The bats killed include large numbers of Grey-headed and Spectacled Flying-foxes. Both are listed as threatened species.

We urge you to withdraw these proposals, and take into consideration the fact that these people who claim the flying foxes are causing crop damage, are a health hazard, and that there are 100,000 in certain areas are exaggerating the figures.

You will find that if you properly investigate these claims, that the numbers will be dramatically lower than what these people claim, and less of a problem with the problems over exaggerated, and crop damage not caused by flying foxes.

Remember that we are also talking about threatened species.

We hope that you will learn lessons from the past, where numbers have been over exaggerated, with our native wildlife driven to extinction because of the failure to properly investigate such complaints.

We look forward to seeing the changes in the act for the Native Title Act, and see the indigenous prosecuted under white man’s law for the inhumane killing of protected native species showing one law for all.

Stopping the sand mining in Stradbroke Island is important before the Island is completely destroyed.

Looking forward to your correspondence on this matter, including shutting down all the commercial

Kangaroo industries, and immediate action on Fraser Island, sacking the rangers, withdrawing the charges and fine against Jennifer Parkhurst with a full refund and apology to her and infact employing her to continue her monitoring of the Fraser Island Dingoes, who was not guilty of any of the charges laid against her, since she was acting under the animal welfare act that was breached by the former Qld Government and rangers.

All these species mentioned in this email maintain a healthy well balanced eco system, with the loss of any single species having serious ramifications against the environment.

Please re read the original email sent on 8 March 2012, and respond to statements made that weren’t addressed in your response on 12 March 2012.

Looking forward to a response and action to all queries for a humane Qld that takes conservation seriously.

Sincerely

Dear Ms Preston,

Mr Newman has asked me to thank you for you correspondence from the 8th March and 9th March. Due to the high number of emails received, please accept our apologies for the delay in responding.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to contact us to raise these important issues.

In regards to your concerns pertaining to the LNP’s policy on Flying Foxes; the LNP is committed to protecting Queensland’s native fauna, including flying foxes.

At the outset, we need to distinguish between small colonies residing in the backyards of many rural properties – many of which are welcomed by property owners, even encouraged – and these huge congregations, some in far excess of 100,000 in places like Charter Towers, Gayndah, Barcaldine and Bargara. These massive urban colonies present significant health risks for the local populations and need to be moved on.

An LNP Government will work with councils and landholders affected by nuisance colonies to ensure human health and agricultural productivity are not adversely affected.

I stress that lethal DMPs will only be issued to farmers where all other non-lethal alternatives have failed or are unsuitable. I am happy to explore alternatives to lethal means should they be available and reasonable in terms of cost.

I appreciate we may have differing opinions on this one but I believe the LNP is offering a very balanced approach – one that balances the ongoing conservation of flying foxes with public health and agricultural production.

Furthermore, An LNP Government will act to protect Queensland’s iconic dugong and turtle populations.

Labor has failed to address animal welfare considerations in relation to some so-called “traditional hunting practices” despite repeated and urgent calls for action by concerned Queenslanders, including from Indigenous leaders.

LNP recognises there is an entitlement of traditional owners to hunt dugongs and sea turtles for non- commercial use under the Native Title Act 1993.

The LNP will work with Indigenous stakeholders to protect Queensland’s dugong and turtle populations from poachers and stop brutality against these iconic species.

Some Indigenous communities have already self-imposed moratoriums or regulated hunting practices by issuing permits and licences – an LNP government will work with Indigenous communities to see this successful and proactive model rolled out across the dugong and turtle habitat.

The LNP will remove the current exemption for traditional hunters from the law that makes it illegal for anyone to wound, mutilate, torture or unnecessarily prolong the death of an animal – enforceable with penalties of up to two years in jail or a $100,000 fine.

This will bring Queensland in line with other states and territories. There is no reason to permit horrendous cruelty to dugongs and turtles, which under any other circumstance would be illegal.

The LNP in Government will seek to partner with other Government agencies, especially the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority – GBRMPA, and, with the guidance of traditional owners and Indigenous organisations, will progressively roll out in all key habitats the successful permit and licensing system developed in the Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York.

The LNP will put a stop to the cruel and inhumane slaughter of these iconic Queensland animals under the guise of ‘traditional practices’.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us and raise these issues. We cannot have a change in Queensland without a change of Government. Only a vote for a strong, united LNP Team can get Queensland back on track!

Kind regards,

Campbell Newman Team.

Good afternoon,

Further to my email yesterday, to which I have not yet received a response, I need to further add this REPORT BELOW and request your assurance that the Native Title Act will be amended to ensure one law for all, and that the indigenous waged rangers and offenders are prosecuted under the white man’s law for their serious crimes, that animal welfare will be included in the Native Title Act and prosecutions for killing native protected land and marine wildlife will also be included in the Native Title Act.

INHUMANE SLAUGHERS OF PROTECTED ENDANGERED GREEN SEA TURTLES AND DUGONGS IN TORRES STRAIT QUEENSLAND BY INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS.

ABC1’s 7.30 report on 8/3/12 exposed extreme cruelty to our protected vulnerable to extinction native Green Sea Turtles and Dugongs at the hands of taxpayer waged indigenous officials, and other indigenous Australians, selling the meat and other parts of the marine life on the black market, please click on this link to see the report: http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2012/s3448943.htm
hunting rights hide horror for dugongs, turtles, Queensland’s Torres Strait far north Qld, far to the south of Qld, Protected endangered Green Sea Turtles chased weekly on Green Island in front of tourists, protected and endangered pregnant Green Sea Turtle with upto125 eggs, tethered for 3 days then inhumanely killed by indigenous Australians, still alive when carved up, dugongs dragged behind boats and drowned.

Taxpayer waged indigenous sea rangers are the head hunters of these inhumane crimes pocketing huge sums of money for the sale of their meat, bones in this illegal trade, with all eskies shipped through the airports addressed to the rangers.

The indigenous Australian legislation fails to protect endangered species from being slaughtered and inhumanely butchered by the indigenous people.

The Native Title Act needs to be immediately changed to protect all endangered species and ensure that the animal welfare act applies – one law for all. No hunting of protected native wildlife, No hunting of protected endangered species, animal welfare applies with imprisonment and huge fines.

The videoed indigenous people and indigenous rangers immediately arrested, charged, prosecuted and imprisoned, accordingly to white man’s law, the rangers immediately terminated from their jobs and banned for life from working with any animals.

Looking forward to your response to all of the matters raised in yesterday’s 8/3/12, CAN BE SEEN BELOW, and today’s 9/3/12 emails.

Sincerely

Subject: Re: Invitation to Lunch with Campbell Newman & John Howard

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your acknowledgement.

I have been sent some disturbing information that Campbell Newman is proposing for his election.

The Liberal National Party of Qld says they will re-introduce lethal methods of crop protection if elected at the upcoming State elections.

We urge you to withdraw these proposals including sand mining on Stradbroke Island that will destroy a unique island.

You will find that the majority of your voters are looking for the end of inhumane and unnecessary killings of all native wildlife, the kangaroo commercial industries shut down, that those responsible for the dingo cruelty on Fraser Island are terminated from their jobs and their inhumane practices, scientific research etc ended with the withdrawal of charges and fine against Jennifer Parkhurst, and places of interest such as Stradbroke Island maintained untouched, with conservation and animal welfare as a top priority.

Your voters who claim they will vote for you if you continue to allow inhumane killings and reintroduce inhumane methods, driving native wildlife that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system to extinction, and destroy places of interest such as Stradbroke Island are of a minority and therefore are not enough numbers who will get you voted in.

We’ve been disappointed in not seeing any mention of conserving native wildlife, placing them onto the federal wildlife protection list as endangered species, such as the dingo, kangaroos, etc, and ending all inhumane methods currently used, and the conservation of Qld.

Native wildlife do not do the damage that certain people claim they do, you therefore need to be careful who you listen to, in order for you to get voted in, and then continue to work with those of us who are sensible with knowledge and expertise in our areas, after you get voted in.

Qld does need a change, but not in an inhumane way by reintroducing acts of animal cruelty that have been outlawed, and not by destroying Stradbroke Island.

The changes that Qld need is an end of the kangaroo commercial industry, an end to the inhumane unnecessary killing of kangaroos and other macropods, an end to all inhumane killings of animals, an end of driving native wildlife to extinction, an end of listening to the people who don’t know what they are talking about when they say there are millions of wildlife out there, when the sad fact is, that there aren’t, and those are the exact statements that see our native wildlife driven to extinction, by over exaggerating the population, refusing to admit that the numbers are dramatically low.

Looking forward to your response in these matters, and to see them in your can do campaign.

Sincerely

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/

don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays.

Please check out this link: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx

that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related

SEE the so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP REPORTS ON ANIMAL CRUELTY, CALLING FOR WITNESSES – BRUSH-TAIL POSSUM IN PHILLIP, SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOO IN KAMBAH, AND WATER DRAGON CARE. 19/3/12.

It is horrifying enough to watch acts of animal cruelty on television news, current affair programs and documentaries released.

It is also traumatic enough to be handed native wildlife that have been almost bashed to death, and other injured wildlife, but nothing can prepare you for witnessing acts of animal cruelty performed right in front of you.

Photos taken by NORA PRESTON

SULPHUR CRESTED COCKATOO – Animal Cruelty NSW 16/3/12

On 16/3/12, as usual, I drove to Queanbeyan to buy parrot mix.

Nothing could prepare me for what I witnessed on that day, in a place where you think the parrots and cockatoos would be in a safe haven full of food for them, where they make parrot mix.

As I began driving out of the driveway, a cockatoo was trapped on the concrete ground behind netting that they placed around their large steel drums.

One of the managers kicked at the cockatoo.  At first I thought he was attempting to kick the net out to release the bird from the net, but then he kicked harder directly at the trapped cockatoo so I blasted my horn at the male in the attempt to stop him.

Instead of stopping his acts of animal cruelty, he then stomped on the bird, that appeared to me to be on his head while still trapped behind the netting, trying to kick and stomp the bird to death.

I drove up to him and stopped the car next to him, jumped out of the car and told him to stop, and asked him what he thought he was doing, and then told him that you can’t do that.

I told him you lift the netting up to let the bird out and release the bird, you do not kick them and stomp on them.

He angrily said that he did it to teach the other birds a lesson so that they won’t come back.

I informed him that they are attracting the birds there by making the parrot mixes there for them.

He said they are not making it for them to which I replied yes you are, who else do you think you are making them for, why do you think I am here.

I described what the manager did to 2 other employees who were still there and told them that was animal cruelty.

I asked one of the employee’s to get a box for the bird, so that I can take it straight to the vet.

By the time the employee got back with a box and a towel, the cockatoo staggered out from behind the net himself through an opening he found, which is obviously how he got behind the net in the first place.

As the bird was staggering around and collapsing I quickly put the towel over the bird and placed him in the box.

I told the manager to ensure he tells his staff that they are not to commit acts of animal cruelty on the birds there and to help them.

He shook his head saying no he won’t.

I reminded him that he had just committed acts of animal cruelty and he can be prosecuted for that.

He then asked me well then tell me how to keep the birds away from here.

He has been advised to check the internet for ‘bird scarers’ where he can purchase falcon appearing kites.

They attract a small flock of Crested Pigeons, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, (approx 6) Galahs, (approx 6) with 1 domestic Pigeon into their parrot mix making complex, seen on 16/3/12.

The cockatoo was taken immediately to the vet and examined. I was given powdered psittavet as treatment, using 1 capful diluted in 1 cup of his drinking water.

The veterinary examination showed bleeding in the throat, clicking of the wings with possible broken bones.

The bird is currently being rehabilitated at the expense of Wildlife Carers Group.

I have reported the incident to the Queanbeyan police and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services on 19/3/12, expecting this male to be prosecuted under the animal welfare act, and the protected native wildlife act for attempting to kill a protected native animal.

If the cockatoo does not survive due to his horrific injuries, then the penalty will be causing death to a native species.

I was advised by the police this afternoon 19/3/12 that they will be attending my property to take down a statement, but no one has phoned yet to let me know that they are on their way.

I was advised by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, Parks and Wildlife section, to phone them back with the Police Officer’s name when I have it, so that they can work together with the police, the female I spoke with also advised me to write down all my costs and claim it back through the police report.

I was in so much shock at what had happened in front of me to this bird, that taking photos of the cockatoo as the vet examined him was the last thing on my mind.

I returned to where the cockatoo was being rehabilitated to check on him and to take a photo on Saturday 17/3/12.

Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita)– animal cruelty NSW 16/3/12.

CALLING FOR WITNESSES – BRUSH-TAIL POSSUM, Callam Street and Launceston Street, Phillip, ACT 13/3/12.

On Tuesday 13/3/12 Wildlife Carers Group received a call for a Brush-tail Possum (Trichosurus caninus) in Phillip. The description given was that his eyes were popped out.

This describes what happens when someone tries to bash an animal to death.

We were in Goulburn at the time of the call, so I asked the students to get a box and use a thick towel or blanket to lift the possum up and put him into the box, and to keep him in a quiet place until we get there to pick the possum up.

The male possum had one bloodied eye, with a huge dent in his head.

He was immediately treated with antibiotics and a painkiller.

Any witnesses with information or the person or people responsible for this possum either being bashed to death or a hit and run, please email wildlife_carers_group@yahoo.com.au  with ‘Possum Phillip’ in the subject heading, providing your information.

CALLING FOR WITNESSES – SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOO MUTILATED – WINGS DISPLAYED ON DASHBOARD OF CAR IN KAMBAH, ACT.

Since 22/2/12 a pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoo wings have been displayed on the dashboard of this silver sedan with NSW rego number AY-83-AP, in Drysdale Cct Kambah, that is also permanently illegally and dangerously parked on the road in between blind bends of the street since 22/2/12.

It is unknown when this incident occurred with the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.

A blurred picture of the male offender of the mutilated Sulphur-crested cockatoo wings displayed on the dashboard of the silver sedan, driving white van rego.no. YCH 13J.

Pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoo wings displayed on dashboard of this car can be seen ON YOUR LEFT/driver’s side, and close up of wing on dash above the photo of the car.

I phoned the rspca, then the ACT police on 131444, who phoned tams. I further sent an email to the Chief Minister. A ranger phoned me and told me that the afp phoned him and that he did not want to go out by himself to check it out and would go out with another person on Saturday 3/3/12.

I advised the ranger that the wings have to be confiscated with the male offender prosecuted, even if it is just for mutilating a native species when dead if he can’t get enough evidence on acts of animal cruelty and torturing a native species to death.

On Sunday 4/3/12, and Monday 5/3/12 the cockatoo wings were still displayed in his window on his dashboard.

I phoned the rspca back, I then phoned the afp back on 131444 to find out who phoned me so that I can ring him back, and sent a couple of more emails to the Chief Minister with more photos to show that no action has been taken.

After the police finally phoned me back with the information, I phoned the rangers number on Wednesday 7/3/12, with the original ranger who rang me answering the phone.

He advised that they investigated the matter on Tuesday 5/3/12, and that the owner of the vehicle immediately took the wings out of the car.

The wings were not confiscated and he was not prosecuted.

The rspca did nothing.

I had no response from the Chief Minister.

Anyone with any information on this Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and the wings is asked to email wildlife_carers_group@yahoo.com.au  with ‘Cockatoo wings
Kambah‘ in the subject heading, and provide your information.

TAWNY FROGMOUTH 17/3/12

After witnessing how a person can kick and stomp on our protected native wildlife, seeing the bashing of our native wildlife, and the injuries that they get from human inflicted violence that resembles a vehicle strike, you start treating each injured wildlife with suspicion of acts of animal cruelty.

This Tawny Frogmouth was handed into Wildlife Carers Group on 17/3/12, after being picked up flapping around on the ground.

Yes, it is extremely expensive to care for wildlife, however, you don’t see Wildlife Carers Group unnecessarily killing all the animals to cut costs, and because we can’t be bothered.

All native wildlife are protected.

It is an offence to attack,  harass, injure or kill any native wildlife that will therefore lead to prosecution.

It is an offence to mutilate any native wildlife, alive or dead, that will also lead to prosecution.

For sick, injured, orphaned native wildlife, phone 0406 056 099.

If you witness any of the above, including a hit and run, please email wildlife_carers_group@yahoo.com.au with the relevant subject heading so that it won’t be mistaken for spam.

If you hit any wildlife, stop, offer it assistance, phone Wildlife Carers Group, it is an offence to hit and run that will therefore lead to prosecution.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT IN 2011.

WISHING YOU A VERY SAFE AND HAPPY YEAR FOR 2012.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html .

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

Please click on this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg

Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be

who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them, will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty. Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and can offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 90 odd Dingoes, population estimation as of 28-29 August 2011, (since the mismanaged Fraser Island fire by the Qld government, this Dingo population has more than likely dropped dramatically), that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

TAKE CARE – REPTILES ARE ON THE MOVE TO HIBERNATE

If you are confused in what season we are in, you can imagine how the reptiles feel, is it summer, or is it winter. Climate change is taking its toll on our wildlife.

Wildlife Carers Group is receiving a number of calls for reptiles that are trying to find a cosy spot to hibernate in.

Water Dragon, Physignathus lesuerii, a member of the Agamidae, or dragon family.

Bearded Dragon, agamid lizards of the genus Pogona, most commonly Pogona vitticeps.

Pogona describes seven species naturally found in arid, semi-arid woodlands and rocky deserts in central Australia.

Diet for rehabilitation: suitable leafy green vegetables include collard greens, spring greens, escarole, turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley and carrot tops, and may also eat orange-fleshed squashes, pattypan squash, pumpkins, green beans, peas, carrots or their tops, beetroot, alfalfa (Lucerne), celery, rosemary, oregano and basil, suitable flower greens include dandelion greens, nasturtium, hibiscus, pansies, carnations and rose petals. Suitable fruit includes grapes, strawberries, raspberries, apples, pears, peaches, melons, papayas and mangoes, supplemented regularly with insects, such as crickets, black soldier fly larvae, locusts, superworms, waxworms, silkworms, butterworms, variety of roaches. Young dragons require a significantly greater insect-to-plant matter ratio in their diets than adults.

Mealworms have a hard chitin (Chitin (C8H13O5N)n (
/ˈktɨn/) is a long-chain polymer of a N-acetylglucosamine, a derivative of glucose, and is found in many places throughout the natural world. It is the main component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods such as crustaceans (e.g., crabs, lobsters and shrimps) and insects, the radulas of mollusks, and the beaks of cephalopods, including squid and octopuses. In terms of structure, chitin may be compared to the polysaccharide cellulose and, in terms of function, to the protein keratin. Chitin has also proven useful for several medical and industrial purposes) exoskeleton which makes it difficult for dragons to digest and relatively low in nutrients. Waxworms and superworms should only be given as occasional treats, and should be fed sparingly as they are extremely fatty.

Poisonous and dangerous foods are insects captured in the wild due to the increased risk of parasitic exposure and viruses. Fireflies and all other animals with bioluminescent chemicals are fatal to bearded dragons. Ref: Wikipedia.

Housing: The bare minimum size for a cage is 36’x12’X18′ for 1 dragon. An aquarium or a terrarium fitted with a screened top can also be used. Since bearded dragons like to climb and sit on top of logs and branches, make sure the housing has a good height.

Reptiles slow down in the cold, and if injured will need heat and lighting using a UVB fluorescent bulb that is necessary for the metabolism of vitamin D3. The dragon will also need a reptile daylight bulb of heat emitter. A combination light fixture that supports both fluorescent and incandescent light fixtures is required. Under-tank heating will come from a heat pad attached to the bottom of the tank. Heat rocks are not advisable because they can potentially form hot spots that could burn your reptile.

Habitat and décor: The substrate for the cage can be aquarium gravel, commercial calcium sand, pebbles, reptile carpet, or play sand. Play sand is an inexpensive, natural-looking substrate good for all but baby bearded dragons. The food bowl should be a smooth insect bowl (for recommended worms, etc) and water dish. Dragons need a hide area like a cave or log. Sturdy branches, logs or rock formations are needed to keep the dragon happy during care. Make sure that the climbing areas are secure and won’t fall and hurt the dragon. You can add artificial plants and decorations as needed to create a more scenic habitat.

Cleaning the habitat: The dragon’s droppings and leftover vegetables must be cleaned daily. The water bowl, food bowl, and substrate must be checked for fouling and cleaned. The easiest way to clean the substrate is to use an aquarium fish net to scoop out the waste. The cage decorations, décor, and glass should also be cleaned periodically. Ref: Bearded Dragon Guide.

Diseases and Injuries: Impaction – the indigestible large food or substrates, causing blockage in the dragon’s intestinal tract.

Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) – Due to insufficient calcium intake or inaccurate cage lighting setup that causes swelling of the lower jaw, softening of jaw bones, deformities in tail and spine, not growing at normal rate, fractured limbs, and not being able to move. Symptoms as the condition progresses is muscle twitching, seizures, loss of appetite, and loss of energy (lethargy. MBD is also known as fibrous osteodystrophy or nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism that is commonly seen in juvenile bearded dragons that are less than 2 years old. Treatment usually requires injectable or oral calcium, a multi-vitamin or mineral supplement or calcitonin, a drug which puts calcium back into the bearded dragon’s bones. Primarily, and for long term management, the diet has to be corrected and UV-B lighting has to be provided.

To prevent injuries during rehabilitation, keep dragons in separate cages to prevent fighting between males etc.

Mites – when external parasites feed off the blood of the bearded dragon. Parasites, especially pinworms. No clinical signs may be seen with the parasites only being detected on a fecal examination. In some cases, parasites may cause diarrhea or weight loss. Pinworms are probably commensal organisms (an association between two organisms in which one benefits while the other derives neither benefit nor harm). Mites and ticks can be found on the skin of bearded dragons. They come from other bearded dragons, and are often seen moving around, under or between scales around the head and in skin folds. Treatment – several deworming medications are available, formulated as either oral or injectable drugs. The type of parasite identified on the microscopic fecal examination will determine which drug is needed Mites and ticks can be treated either topically or with oral or injectable medication, as advised by the vet. Environmental cleaning, disinfecting and treatment may be needed as well.

Tail Rot – when the bearded dragon’s tail tip is darkened and gets infected. If not treated, the tail may eventually drop off.

Coccidia – is a type of micro-parasite that is found in the intestinal tract of the dragon causing stomach pains, diarrhea, fluid loss and makes it hard for the dragon’s system to absorb food. Ref: Bearded Dragon Care; VCA Animal Hospitals and Specialty Animal Hospitals.

Infectious stomatitis (mouth rot) – is not seen often in bearded dragons. It is a bacterial condition seen as pinpoint hemorrhages on the gums, swollen gums or an excess amount of thick mucus, often like cottage cheese, in the mouth. Mouth rot can also cause swelling of the jaw, just like MBD. Treatment usually requires injectable antibiotics, as well as rinsing the mouth with antibiotic solutions.

Respiratory infections – or pneumonia can occur in animals that are stressed, improperly fed or kept in poor, cold or dirty conditions. You may see sneezing, nasal or ocular discharge, bubbles in the mouth, unnaturally rapid or shallow breathing, pulling or gasping for breath and lethargy. Treatment – can be diagnosed with x-rays, blood tests and cultures of discharges or other samples. They will be treated with oral or injectable antibiotics. If they are severe, the animal may have to be hospitalized for more aggressive therapy and supportive treatment.

Hypervitaminosis D – is a condition that develops if either over-supplemented the diet with vitamins and minerals or feed it dog or cat food. Clinical signs are vague and include lack of appetite and lethargy. Treatment – is a severe problem that requires hospitalization and intensive therapy with fluids, force-feeding, and drugs to help lower the dragon’s calcium level. Dietary modification is necessary. hunting rights hide horror for dugongs, turtles, Queensland’s Torres Strait far north Qld, far to the south of Qld, Protected endangered Green Sea Turtles chased weekly on Green Island in front of tourists, protected and endangered pregnant Green Sea Turtle with upto125 eggs, tethered for 3 days then inhumanely killed by indigenous Australians, still alive when carved up, dugongs dragged behind boats and drowned.

To sign the petition and help Australian Fauna Care to stop the inhumane shooting and electrocution please click on this link: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/don-t-shoot-bats.html

PLEASE SIGN PETITION TO STOP Sand Mining on Stradbroke Island

Change.org are running a petition to stop sand mining on Queensland’s North Stradbroke Island that currently has 3 large sand mines operating causing permanent damage to the Island. To sign the petition please click on this link: http://www.care2.com/news/member/183825372/3117581

A WIN FOR KANGAROOS AS CHANNEL 7’s MY KITCHEN RULES (MKR) Peter and Gary LOSE after COOKING KANGAROO STROGANOFF on 8/3/12.

A sudden death cook off ended up being the sudden death from the cooking show for Peter, a 44 year old former Commonwealth prosecutor who never lost a single case during his career, currently working as a university lecturer teaching law and Gary, 50, a former GP who also now lectures to medical students, from Queensland, after cooking 3 disastrous courses, with the main course being a revolting Kangaroo Stroganoff.

A message to leave native protected Kangaroos alone to live out their lives in their habitat.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP WILDLIFE REHABILITATION AND RELEASE + COMPETITION – IDENTIFY THIS BIRD + BIRDS IDENTIFIED FROM COMPETITION ON 27/11/11. 3/3/12.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP WILDLIFE REHABILITATION AND RELEASE + COMPETITION – IDENTIFY THIS BIRD + BIRDS IDENTIFIED FROM COMPETITION ON 27/11/11. 3/3/12.

In Spring 2011 this pictured native bird, on the left having a stretch and a shower, was handed into Wildlife Carers Group after being hit by a car in Belconnen.

After 5 and a half months of loving care and full term rehabilitation, this bird had fully recovered and was finally released last Friday 24/2/12.

While it isn’t recommended to do releases in your own backyard with all native wildlife, at times, they can be successful, with this bird already making friends with the few other birds of the same species that enjoy a free feed from my backyard that also offers natural growing feed for them.

The bird population, along with other native wildlife has dramatically dropped that is a huge concern, through destructive large chunks of habitat loss for developers, inhumane and unnecessary over killing by the government and property owners shooters, laying of poisoned baits, spraying toxic chemicals, deadly roads, and all other manmade deaths.

If the killing and construction work doesn’t stop, our wildlife will be nothing but memories, and when we die, the memories will die with us with our wildlife being nothing but a picture in a book, or a poster.

Identify these birds on the telephone wire

BIRDS IDENTIFIED FROM COMPETITION ON 27/11/11.

Grass Parrots, Left – male, Right – female.

On 27/11/11 you were asked to identify these birds and their sex.

These beautiful parrots (Psittaciformes) have almost disappeared, when they were plentiful in 1974 in the Kambah region.

I personally have not seen any sightings in my area since all the development went up around me and the golf course went in, until last year when I quickly snapped these photos of these pair of birds in my street pecking away at the gravel.

These parrots are Grass Parrots, Red-rumped Parrots, or Red-backed parrots (Psephetus haematonotus), slightly bigger than budgerigars (175-185mm) in size with the Grass Parrots being 260-270mm including their long tapered tail.

The brighter green coloured bird to your left in the picture, is the male that has the red rump, the female is a duller more olive green colour that does not have a red rump that is on your right in the picture.

Since the females don’t share a red rump with the males, the name Red-rumped Parrot is not a suitable name for these parrots that only identifies the male bird in this species, so I prefer to use the name Grass Parrots that easily identifies both sexes of these parrots.
