HAVE A SAFE MAGICAL XMAS & NEW YEAR IN 2015

Thank you to all of you for all of your support in 2014.

Emails have not been sent out throughout the year because of being very busy, however posts have been posted to social media. I have had a busy year in 2014 fighting for wildlife, wildlife habitat and animal welfare starting it off by going out to a NSW Wheat and Sheep farm in a 40 degree heat in January 2014. Animal welfare was a serious issue on this farm that was over stocked with not enough food and water for the amount of sheep on it. We had to drag 2 rams out of the water hole that they were stuck in that had turned into mud, with both of them badly injured. Farmers are not properly prepared to humanely remove livestock that are stuck in their mud holes. The farmer wanted to leave them there to die from their injuries with no water and food, the licks he left there were untouched. I insisted we take them back to the shed where they were hosed down and given water to drink. Vets don’t appear to be called in to treat the injured livestock and to save them. Another ram’s horns were stuck in the fence that we had to rescue. As we drove around the large property and paddocks in the farm Ute, with 3 dogs exposed to the 40 degree heat on the back of the open Ute, dead sheep lay on the ground with mud holes everywhere and the paddocks were dust bowls. He had a few cattle that were looked after a bit better that were kept in a grassed paddock with water. I insisted that he open up the paddock gates with no food or water in them to let the sheep into paddocks where there was food and water. I didn’t expect to see what I did, so I left my camera in the car back by the shed where my lip gloss completely melted, therefore, sorry, no photos. My concerns are that the majority of sheep and cattle farmers and other animal/livestock farmers treat their animals the same way with overcrowding, by overstocking and neglect that results in suffering and a prolonged agonising death to the livestock.

In January, 26/1/14 (Australia Day) https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2014/01/26/wildlife-carers-group-news-happy-australia-day-26114/, and 24 April 2014 we visited the National Zoo and Aquarium (NZ&A) and found that all the animals are very well looked after, clean and loved. All NZ&A photos taken by me on 24/4/14. All photos by NORA PRESTON.

19 May 2014 I attended the annual Voiceless Animal Law Lecture at the ANU that covered the Ag-gag Laws, where criminals who operate commercial agricultural facilities want to be able to continue to mistreat and torture animals to death without being detected and so target the undercover investigators, whistleblowers and journalists who intervene with the violence committed to then stop the violence towards the animals through media coverage. Ag-gag laws want to criminalise the undercover surveillance of their facilities, require that any footage must be turned over to police immediately rather than given to the media and force farm employees to disclose ties to animal protection groups. To learn more about the Ag-gag laws visit http://www.voiceless.org.au/aggag.

Will Potter is an award-winning independent journalist and public speaker based in Washington, D.C. who has written for several publications in animal and environmental law standing in the foreground. https://www.voiceless.org.au/sites/default/files/Abstract280214Final.pdf, In the background to your left is Tara Ward(Animal Lib, & one of the Founder’s of The Animal Defenders Office)

I attended a few days of the ACAT/Tribunal case against TAMS by Animal Liberation in their fight to stop the Kangaroo killing that after a long hard battle they unfortunately lost that still went ahead again in 2014, with laws still being broken with the lies sent out about the Kangaroos by the government in their media releases, deliberately misleading the public and the media, who continue to unlawfully torture our protected native wildlife to death, who are driving them to extinction, destroying the healthy well balanced eco system that the Kangaroos assist in maintaining.

I have assisted others in wildlife matters and have been busy in fighting for a better understanding, proper care and treatment for all of our native wildlife, along with a lot more work that is all too numerous for me to mention. We hope that our suffering wildlife under the ACT government will have a better year in 2015.

I have sent out posts on social media and today sent an email to Greg Hunt attempting to stop and ban the WA drum lines that are inhumanely and unnecessarily used to bait, catch and torture our poor sharks to death by the WA Government and Fisheries Dept. Feel free to write your own letters to Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt to help ban the drum lines and nets:

Good afternoon,

I draw your attention to the recent media release shark-drum-lines-set-off-warnbro-beach-as-hunt-for-tagged-great-white-continues  on WA Government and Fisheries Dept going back on their word to stop baiting innocent sharks that live in the water that is extremely inhumane.  https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/25827930/shark-drum-lines-set-off-warnbro-beach-as-hunt-for-tagged-great-white-continues/.

We ask you to urgently intervene and order the WA Government to remove all drum lines from the water and to leave this tagged shark alone.  We further ask you to urgently ban the use of drum lines and nets in the oceans and to replace them with the Shark Shield that is an electronic device that successfully deters sharks from entering the areas that you want to deem safe for the people.

In 1992 Valerie and Ron Taylor successfully tested the Shark Shield against the Great White Sharks and made the recommendation to remove all of the nets and to replace them with these electronic devices that was quite obviously ignored. Valerie and her now deceased husband (2012) Ron Taylor filmed a documentary to show how the deterrents worked.

I am quoting from the Shark Shield Wikipedia testing for your information with the link below some of the quotes from the report:

“…The original “SharkPOD” was tested for eight years off Dyer Island with mainly great white sharks, and was the first electronic device that was proven successful in deterring sharks when tested by Ron Taylor and Valerie Taylor in 1992 on sharks in Australia and South Africa with positive results—they made a documentary about it called “Shark POD”. Extensive field testing was conducted on the Shark Shield off Neptune Island, South Australia, using the FREEDOM4 and subsequently the FREEDOM7 by renowned wildlife documentary videographer, Ian “Shark” Gordon. Gordon personally tested the effectiveness of the device on a variety of particularly aggressive shark species, including black-tipped reef sharks, mako sharks, and great white sharks, by setting a tuna bait to attract the sharks while he was wearing a Shark Shield, and then videoing their hasty retreat as they approached within meters of the activated device.[8]…

All chondrichthyans have highly sensitive electrical receptors called the “Ampullae of Lorenzini” located in their snouts. These tiny gel filled sacs sense electrical current from prey at very close distances, typically less than one meter. They use these short range sensors when feeding or searching for food. They do not use electrical receptors to track animate objects over long distances; other senses such as audition and olfaction are the primary drivers.[3][4]

Shark Shield devices create an electrical waveform that creates an unpleasant sensation impacting the shark’s ‘Ampullae of Lorenzini’. When the shark comes into proximity of the electrical waveform (a few meters in diameter) it experiences uncontrollable muscular spasms causing it to flee the area.[5][6]

The field is projected from two electrodes, which create an elliptical field that surrounds the user. Both electrodes must be immersed in the water for the field to be created. Research conducted by The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in 2012 estimated the Shark Shield electrical field to be approximately four to five meters in diameter.[7]

While sharks are attracted to electromagnetic pulses produced by potential prey animals, the electronic field emitted by the Shark Shield does not attract sharks to the device and therefore would not increase the risk of attracting sharks to the vicinity of the user. A shark’s sensory organs are acutely sensitive to low-voltage gradients (> 5 nVcm), enabling them to detect very low-frequency electronic fields of between 1–8 Hz at short range, after which the other senses (sight, chemoreception and mechanoreception) aid the shark in capturing its prey.[3][4] The range at which an electronic shark deterrent emits a field that is the equivalent of a prey-like stimulus (approx 1–100 nV/cm) is much further than their short range detection facilitates. Should a shark approach the device, the strength of the electric field will get stronger the closer it gets, and will soon cause the shark extreme discomfort, forcing it to turn away.

Scientific studies modelling this effect show that the output produced at a 3 meter distance is far greater than that produced by prey, and would drop off significantly beyond a 6 m radius, where it would be beyond the short range detection ability of a shark…”.

I look forward to your response and urgent assistance in this matter.

We wish you all a safe and Magical Xmas and New Year for 2015.

A similar email as above was also sent to Katrina Hodgkinson, NSW Minister for Primary Industries on the Sydney shark nets that catch Stingrays, Sharks and other marine life causing them a prolonged suffering death when they get caught up in the nets. https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/video/watch/25584934/shark-caught-in-bondi-nets/. A response from her Dept was received today 22/12/14, that wasn’t adequate, considering the years that they have had to ban the shark nets and to replace them with electronic devices to deter the sharks from entering certain areas.

Emails have been sent to the Ministers and Prime Minister to stop the trawlers from entering Australia scooping up all our marinelife and driving them to extinction, to stop the dredging and dumping at Abbot Point, etc.

On 1 March 2014 the biting flies began biting my old dog’s ears. 22 December 2014 the nasty flies are still at it when they normally leave by the end of winter. Use Bosistos antibacterial Tea Tree spray to heal and repel flies. I have had to further use personal insect repellant, since the flies return it seems after 10 minutes of spraying. I’m spraying my entire dog with both the Tea Tree spray and personal insect repellant. Make sure you cover up your old dogs eyes before spraying. You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html .

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/  don fletcher from tams says thatkangaroos are not the main problem and in fact‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays.

Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg  ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related , so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

Dingoes

Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be , who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them, will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty. Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and can offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 90 odd Dingoes, population estimation as of 28-29 August 2011, (since the mismanaged Fraser Island fire by the Qld government, this Dingo population has more than likely dropped dramatically), that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP NEWS 30/12/13

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

We hope that everyone who celebrates Xmas have celebrated an extremely Merry Xmas. Have a safe and Happy New Year in 2014.

WordPress blogs and emails sent out have slowed down this year to rest my eyes due to many hours of computer work etc, that I also haven’t been paid to do since I volunteer all my time to do all this work; however that has not slowed down our work for our wildlife and other animals, animal welfare fighting to end animal cruelty. Some updates were posted on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nora.preston.16 .  To be able to read the Facebook posts you will need to have your own Facebook profile.  Become a Facebook friend.

Even at the Eye Hospital, my wildlife rescue didn’t stop where I had to rescue a baby Blue Tongue Lizard that ventured into the building through the door that was slightly open.

There was no time for photos as I borrowed a Hospital towel to throw the towel over the Lizard, very gently pick it up, rush it out through the door and release it in their courtyard.

I attempted to release it in the garden under the rocks and bushes, and not on the tiles, however the Lizard had other ideas and began following me back into the building, so I had to run back in while the eye specialist held the door open for me and then quickly shut the door as I got back inside where I continued to wait to see another eye specialist.

No, I didn’t charge for my services, since I am a volunteer; however I was still charged a hefty bill by the Eye Hospital.

It’s great to be so appreciated.

Watch out for some Optometrists’ and eye specialists, some appear to want you to go blind before they do anything to prevent blindness. Get a 2nd opinion.  It’s too late to reverse it once you go blind.

We had a very busy year in 2013. So much was on that some information may be missed in this News.

On 8 May 2013 I attended the Voiceless Animal Law Lecture at the ANU: https://www.voiceless.org.au/animal-law/lecture-series/2013

GUEST SPEAKER founder and former Director of the Foundation for the Animal and a specialist in human-animal-relationships in Swiss and international law, Antoine F. Goetschel, currently partner at the law firm Krepper Knecht Partner, previously the animal welfare lawyer for the Canton of Zurich.

The Summary of the Voiceless Animal Law Lecture

On 31 May 2013 along with other meetings prior to the Federal Elections, I attended the Animal Justice Party Meetings.

From Left to Right: Candidate for ACT Marcus Fillinger, President Steve Garlick, Candidate for NSW Mark Pearson.

COMPETITION: Identify this bird. The first 10 to reply will receive FREE MEMBERSHIPS.

On 13 June 2013 I attended the National Capital Authority’s 5th Annual Public Forum to speak up for the necessity to maintain wildlife habitat and our wildlife: http://www.nationalcapital.gov.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2595:public-forum-2013&catid=111:public-forum&Itemid=930

On 31/10/13 I attended the Conservation Council and Environmental Defender’s Office Planning and Environment Dispute Resolution Forum where we received an Environment Law Handbook: http://www.edo.org.au/edoact/publications.html.

Speaker Professor Peta Spender from ACAT/Tribunal

Speaker Stephen Johnson, Senior Associate, King & Wood Mallesons

In between these Forums and meetings, I attended other meetings, Forums etc. as well that kept me busy throughout the year.

I wrote to Chinese Embassies in the US and Australia on their violent angora rabbit industries where they rip the fur off the conscious live rabbits. Don’t buy anything with Angora in it. You will find images and videos on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nora.preston.16.

I received enquiries on macropod formula that I had to investigate that were causing loss of weight and blindness that unfortunately included Di-vetelact. I questioned whether or not Di-vetelact purchased their protein from China, since apparently it is the Chinese protein that is causing the problems. Di-vetelact/Sharpe denied purchasing the protein from China, however, hopefully my phone discussion with the company has made them aware that there is a problem with their product and that they are rectifying it.  Link to article on Biolac and blindness written March 2013: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2013/03/16/wildlife-carers-group-news-galah-avoid-biolac-snakes-molonglo-new-tams-minister-more-17313/

I have copied and pasted the original email sent to us below:

“Dear sir/ madam

I found your very informative website on the net, what a wonderful job are doing for all our animals, thank you.

I was wondering,  if you have the latest information on Di-Vetelact, our Carers were having problems with animals getting cataracts.

I believe the SHARPE  company was importing Protein from China, which we thought may have been the problem, are you aware if this is still the case. I have emailed the company, but am not getting a reply.

We have also been warned about Biolac, M100, M 150 seems to be ok but trouble starts with M 200.

My husband and I are elderly 83 and 80 years old and have been rearing joeys for 20 years, Possums, Wallabies and Eastern Greys.

I’m using Wombaroo at the moment, but am not having the same  results, as when I used Divet. Joeys are slower in putting on weight, I am adding baby Farex to each bottle now, which is working, 1/4 tsp each bottle.

Please if you can find the time, will you let me know if Di-Vet is safe again.

Yours in caring,…”

I’ve also received this email on the subject of Biolac copied and pasted below to which I have responded:

“Thank you Nora.

I came across your advice to carers regarding Biolac causing cataracts and  found it very refreshing to discover a carer like yourself willing to stand up  and speak the truth. You are the only person other than myself you has the guts  to tell others about this terrible problem, where so many unfortunate, innocent  joeys have been euthanased all because of cataracts caused by this  formula.

I have a huge section just on this subject in my new manual which I am  currently working on, with numerous cases and photographs and would like to know  whether you too would like to contribute your case study and photos.

We have pretty well worked out why the cataracts are connected with Biolac,  so I have also added this and have had assistance by Dr Tanya Stevens who, along  with other researchers did the initial study on formula associated  cataracts.

I look forward to hearing from you Nora.

Kind regards

Wildlife Carers Group was also nominated for a $1000 grant from one of the Bank’s who rang me to ask me to fill out a form for them.

Unfortunately I was so busy that I wasn’t able to fill out the form.

I have signed a number of petitions, some of which are on our Facebook page.

Wildlife Carers Group Donations were given as usual to a wildlife vet and to the Make A Wish Foundation.  The Make A Wish donation was given in conjunction with Film Networking Industry (Australia).

In Spring 6/10/13 I unfortunately came across this road kill, so please take care on the roads and remember to slow down and give way to our vulnerable wildlife.  Wildlife have no road sense, however, you do.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html
.

Please click on this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg   ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related, so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species.

These animals are still alive and awake, when going through the abattoir’s chute processing system, dropped on top of one another, through a swinging door, to go through to the next phase, with several possums piled on top of one another, into the same boxes, when delivered to the abattoir, (possums are extremely territorial,) females with joeys, butchered, and bashed to death. Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be
,
who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them, will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP SUBMISSION FOR MOLONGLO AND NORTH WESTON DEVELOPMENTS

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP SUBMISSION FOR MOLONGLO AND NORTH WESTON DEVELOPMENTS ACT

Preamble

The development of Molonglo and North Weston, will breach the intergovernmental agreements in urban Australia, that falls under section 146 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation act 1999 (EPBC) that states that the EPBC and NES will take precedence over all developments,
and will further have a huge devastating impact on matters of National Environmental Significance (NES) that include threatened species, migratory species and important ecological communities.

1 The Molonglo Plan for the Protection of Matters of NES

Any development will completely destroy these habitats, and their protected wildlife, through construction, their equipment, the labourers, the homes, the residents, domestic pets, more roads, pollution, etc, therefore, this development plan must be aborted, in order to maintain the bushland, endangered species, and bush capital.

2 Relationship between the NES Plan and ACT legislation including the structure plan for Molonglo and north Weston

Any development will completely destroy valuable matters of NES, through construction, their equipment, the labourers, the homes, the residents, domestic pets, more roads, pollution, etc, there is no fine line between wildlife and their habitat, that can separate them from the areas that are proposed to be developed, therefore, these developments must be aborted, in order to maintain the bushland, endangered species, and the bush capital.

3 Actions under the NES plan

All this proposed construction will completely destroy the endangered species and their habitat, through construction work, their equipment, labourers, the homes, the residents, domestic pets, more roads, pollution, etc, including the natural flow, food source, for aquatic and other wildlife, of the Molonglo river.

There is no fine line between wildlife and their habitat that can separate them from the areas that are proposed to be developed, therefore, these developments must be aborted, in order to maintain the bushland, endangered species, and the bush capital.

4. Protection of matters of NES

NES identified in the Molonglo valley and north Weston are:

  • White box, Yellow box, Blakely’s red gum grassy woodland and derived native grassland (Box-Gum Woodland);
  • Natural temperate grassland of the southern tablelands of NSW and the ACT (Natural Temperate Grassland);
  • Aprasia parapulchella (Pink-tailed worm lizard);
  • Polytelis swainsonii (Superb Parrot);
  • Lathamus discolour (Swift Parrot);
  • Merops ornatus (Rainbow Bee-eater)

Through this investigation and their own admittance, in this report, development will have an adverse effect on these endangered species, which will be driven to extinction, unless this proposed development is aborted in Molonglo and North Weston.

The Rainbow Bee-eater used to nest at Kambah, in the ’80’s, however, after the Murrumbidgee golf club, and other housing was developed in their habitat, they disappeared.

This rare protected and endangered wildlife are slowly disappearing from the ACT, because of over development of this state, and the destruction of wildlife habitat.

Destruction through Construction cannot be controlled, and is inevitable, through their use of their equipment, labourers, the homes, the people, domestic animals, pollution, more roads, building fences etc.

There is no fine line between wildlife and their habitat that can separate them from the areas that are proposed to be developed, therefore, these developments must be aborted, in order to maintain the bushland, endangered species, to prevent them from being driven to extinction, and the bush capital.

Concerns that were also raised in the questionnaire, is with diverting all the run-off waters into ponds and wetlands, and watering trees, will starve the nearby rivers, and will dry them up.

Long term devastating, destructive impact has not been considered, through the planning of blocking off run-off waters, that the rivers need, and destroying more wildlife and wildlife habitat in the bush capital, that the majority have already expressed, they wish to maintain.

The Murray River dried up just upstream of the Murrumbidgee junction, because of channelling waters away from the river.

Over treating natural waters, kills wildlife, and drives them to extinction, which will also affect human health, with too much chemical treatment intake.

Molonglo and North Weston need to be left alone, with no further habitat destruction and loss.

This will work towards the majority of the populations request, to maintain our bush capital, as native bushland, co existing with ALL our native fauna and flora, preventing extinction of our native flora and fauna.
