LETTERS FROM TWEED HEADS FOR RECOGNITION OF WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP WORK-TWEED HEADS MAGPIE SAVED.

In September 2011, Wildlife Carers Group made phone calls to the Tweed Heads Police Station to stop the killing of the nesting magpie, that was ordered to be shot by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services.

Ongoing emails between Wildlife Carers Group, the government department, and Nationals Party, who represented Wildlife Carers Group, with Wildlife Carers Group requesting that they amend their legislation to protect all nesting magpies, in all circumstances.

While we are aware that this amendment can take time, We are still awaiting to see the amended legislation.

On Friday, 25/11/11, Founding President of Wildlife Carers Group, NORA PRESTON, collected Wildlife Carers Group mail, and found a copy of the letter posted out to us by Geoff Provest, written to Geoff Provest MP, Nationals State Member for Tweed, by Robyn Parker MP, Minister for the Environment, Minister for Heritage:

‘Thank you for your representations of 12 September 2011 on behalf of Ms Nora Preston of the Wildlife Carers Group, regarding the management of magpies by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). I appreciate you bringing Ms Preston’s concerns to my attention.

The ongoing commitment and hard work of the Wildlife Carers Group is commendable, and I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to Ms Preston for her advice regarding magpies……’

That letter included Geoff’s ‘with compliments’ slip with his hand written note:

‘for your records.

The magpie is still alive and sill in its own territory. Nothing has been heard of its attacks for at least a month’.

Below are the previous reports written by Wildlife Carers Group on the Tweed Heads Magpie saga:

Wildlife Carers Group Responses to replies from National Parks and Wildlife Service, (the licence issued to shoot the magpie has been cancelled, with amendments to NPWS policy being looked at, to remove the word ‘destruction’), and Office of Geoff Provest MP NSW Member for Tweed, The Nationals for Regional NSW, to read the full report please click or copy and paste this link into your browser: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2011/09/12/tweed-heads-licence-issued-to-shoot-magpie-cancelled/?sn=l

To read yesterdays article to refresh your memory and what Wildlife Carers Group wrote: The Tweed Heads magpie has been spared for now, however to ensure that this mapgie, or any other magpie are never threatened by National Parks and Wildlife Services again, Wildife Carers Group has made a couple of phone calls to Tweed Heads, and sent out emails to educate in avoiding swooping magpies in nesting seasons, rather than issuing licences to kill, to view the full report please click or copy and paste this link into your browser:

The Sydney Morning Herald ran a poll when it was first announced that NPWS issued a licence to shoot the nesting magpie defending her young, 79% opposed the Magpie from being shot.

Photos of ‘with compliments’ slip from Geoff, and letter from NSW Government Minister for the Environment Robyn Parker MP, received by Geoff’s office on 17/11/11, are below, for your information.

ANIMAL WELFARE-WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP DONATION CERTIFICATE-SPONSORSHIP FOR RADIO AD TO EXPOSE PIG FACTORY FARMING

On 23/11/11, Wildlife Carers Group sent out this report:

Wildlife Carers Group has sponsored a 45 second segment prime time radio ad on one of Australia’s largest commercial stations, copy of receipt shown below, to assist Animals Australia to bring about awareness on pig cruelty in factory farms, and to bring about hefty fines against the offenders, that will assist in ending acts of animal cruelty.

No matter who it is, what industry, which government, anyone in taxpayer paid jobs, who allows any types of acts of animal cruelty, will be prosecuted alongside the offenders who actually commit the acts of animal cruelty, in order to put an end to all acts of animal cruelty.

Below is a photo of the Animals Australia Donation Certificate to Wildlife Carers Group, dated 23/11/11.

KANGAROOS – CHRONICLE ARTICLE 22/11/11, p. 2, by Meredith Clisby.

Article: ‘roo rise puts drivers at risk’

‘…..NRMA Insurance head of research Robert McDonald’ is claiming that suddenly the ACT has a Kangaroo population explosion, but who also ‘….warns drivers to be more prepared on the roads and slow down in wildlife zones the same way as if the weather conditions are bad…..’, echoing Wildlife Carers Group’s Founding President NORA PRESTON’s very own repeated cautions, to slow down and Give Way to our vulnerable wildlife, who have no road sense, with their habitat turned into roads and buildings, while the Chronicle reporter is also quoting ‘an Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate spokeswoman’ who has INCORRECTLY claimed that ‘….the Kangaroo population has increased by about 21 % from last year. This included a 3% decrease at Mulanggari Nature Reserve, and a 64% increase at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary.’

The ACT government claims that “The fence at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary removes some of the factors limiting other populations, namely dogs, motor vehicles, and the ability to disperse into surrounding suburbs”,..

“Consequently the Kangaroo population at the sanctuary increased dramatically in response to the good seasonal conditions.” …..NRMA Insurance received 450 claims for animal-related collisions in 2010, while AAMI received 492…444 of these claims were for Kangaroos. The other claims included 12 for domestic or farm animal collisions and 38 wild animal collisions, including 16 Wombats, 4 Wallabies, a flock of galahs, an emu and 2 koalas.

While the ACT Government and the Australian road rules require people to report collisions with animals, there were only 117 reported crashes of this type in 2010.

The Directorate spokeswoman said while the ACT Government focused its road safety resources towards preventing “the most serious injury” to people, there had been important steps taken to minimise collisions with Kangaroos. This includes the use of 25 GPS tracking collars to map the movements, including road crossings of Kangaroos and the use of funnel fencing and underpasses.

She said further fencing and underpasses would be considered on all new high speed roads where underpass construction would be cost effective. Next year the ACT Government will also trial a new telephone-linked tracking system for Kangaroos, which will email data daily by SMS.

Mr McDonald said the best advice for avoiding Kangaroos was to slow down in sign posted Kangaroo hotspots, never swerve to avoid hitting them, and get used to the ABS if your car had it.’

While Wildlife Carers Group was initially advising on fencing for Kangaroos, further experience has unfortunately shown that fencing seriously injures and kills Kangaroos and their Joeys, as they are frightened, chased, they jump into high fences, that they cannot clear, such as the high fencing at Rose Cottage horse paddocks, where Wildlife Carers Group has had to rescue severely injured Kangaroos from, other fences that the larger females can clear, the smaller Joeys hopping after their mother, cannot clear, and get seriously injured or horrifically killed, suffering if they aren’t found and handed in to Wildlife Carers Group for immediate treatment.

Underpasses have also been found to be hazardous to Kangaroos, when they have been frightened, Kangaroos who are being chased by idiots, and/or their uncontrolled dogs, etc take a flying leap to escape these offenders, and crash down on the concrete underpass, seriously injuring themselves, or killing them.

All native wildlife are protected, therefore, it is an offence to chase, harass, harm, kill, any native wildlife, and the offenders will be prosecuted.

The government and their departments have been warned by Wildlife Carers Group on numerous occasions, that the collars with the GPS, were unfit and invasive for Kangaroos, that have seen the Kangaroos killed on the roads, with the GPS collars causing them to lose their coordination, because of the large invasive collars, and further, the GPS equipment that is attached.

The Government departments and the Government have on numerous occasions been warned and advised by Wildlife Carers Group, to use the tiny macro GPS chips, that are inserted under the skin, and are not invasive.

The new telephone-linked GPS system will need to be a tiny macro GPS system, that will need to be fitted under the skin, otherwise, Wildlife Carers Group will need to take action to end the continued inhumane treatment of our native, protected Kangaroos.

The Kangaroo population has not boomed.

We are seeing far too much construction work, and developments in the ACT, destroying wildlife habitat, and accelerating climate change.

The Kangaroos have lost their habitat, which only gives the appearance of a Kangaroo population explosion.

The Kangaroo population has dramatically declined, with only 20 Kangaroo calls in 2010, and less in 2011.

This drastic decline is because of over culling by the ACT government, and private land owners, and unnecessary dangerous high speed roads that the government has constructed, regardless of the fact that the majority of the ACT population were opposed to any future road developments, with the same majority of the population who were also opposed to any further housing, etc developments, in order to save the Bush Capital, the native wildlife fauna and flora, wildlife habitat, and to maintain open space, to reduce the effects of climate change, wishing for a stress free living environment in our Bush Capital.

Just because people claimed that they hit Kangaroos, in order to claim insurance, does not mean that all the claimants have been honest in what they have hit.

Psychotic drivers deliberately crash into cars, parked or otherwise.

They are fully aware that what they have done is illegal, they can’t admit to deliberately crashing into a parked car, etc, so they will lie, and will say that they hit a Kangaroo, or an animal, or that an animal jumped into them, and hit them, etc. in order to claim insurance.

Yes, I speak with experience, my parked car was crashed into. How do you suppose the illegal hit and run offenders claimed their insurance.

DOG CRUELTY in BOSNIA and the ACT

A Wildlife Carers Group member sent this article and petition through to be circulated and signed.

Wildlife Carers Group has signed this petition: Dear NORA,

Thank you for signing the JUSTICE For Vucko! petition

Thank-you for signing,Rene Davis

Vucko was a German Shepherd living in Bosnia who had fireworks stuffed into his mouth, and set off. He suffered with half his face blown off, wandering the streets for 5 days, before someone found the dog, and handed him in for treatment.

The petition is for stricter laws for offences such as this, to end acts of animal cruelty.

DOG CRUELTY IN THE ACT

In the scorching 30 degree heat, on Monday 14/11/11, this dog was left on the back of a light truck, exposed to the heat, with no food and water, no shade, for hours, in the suburb of Kambah, while the owner walked around, in between mowing his lawns, and whipper snipping, throwing all the rubbish over his dog, that she repeatedly had to shake off herself.

The owner can be seen walking back to his truck, after one of his walks around the neighbourhood, while his dog is left on the back of his truck in the scorching 30 degree heat, no shade, no water, no food, with rubbish dumped on her, that he also parked dangerously on the road, before a blind bend, outside his own residence, who was also causing an obstruction, as you can see in the photo, the recycle bin has not been collected yet, and is also endangering lives, attempting to cause a crash, an injury, or a death. Cyclists would not be able to avoid on coming traffic, from the blind bend, and serious injuries and/or death.

When you see people like the above man, who is trying very hard to inhumanely kill  his dog through heat stroke, heat exhaustion, exposure, who don’t care about animals, you can be certain that they most definitely don’t care about people.

Roads authority/Australian Road Rules have failed to place priority on public safety  here.

This road needs to be marked as a Clearway.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html .

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/  don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays.

Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

Please click on this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg  ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related , so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

Response from Wildlife Carers Group

“Dear Damien,

Thank you for your quick response.

It would be an acceptable outcome, for the ‘destruction’ to be removed from the ‘NPWS policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People 2003‘.

However, interfering with the nesting birds, by removing and relocating them, is not an option.

Magpies are extremely territorial, and will kill each other, if you relocate a nest and parents into another Magpies territory.

The parent cannot be trapped and removed from its nest and young, and partner either.

Magpies work together to feed their young, and again, the parent will be killed by other territorial Magpies.

The nesting season is short.

The continued education for the public to protect themselves in nesting season, and preferably avoid the route of nesting magpies altogether, until nesting season is over, along with your warning signs of nesting magpies, should be adequate.

If any member of the public choose to ignore your warning signs, and they get attacked, it is at their own risk, and you should include that on your warning signs, then you cannot be held accountable.

You can add our concerns to the register as well, that will be provided to the Office of Environment and Heritage policy unit, to remove ‘destruction’ from the policy, but omit, ‘trap and relocate’, for the above reasons given.

Your response and copy of amendments to the NPWS policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People 2003, would be greatly appreciated.”

Thank you for your email regarding the magpie at Industry Drive in South Tweed Heads. I note that the phone number you were given was incorrect. For future reference our office number is 6670 8600.

As you have noted the licence you referred to has been cancelled. Through the coverage of this story the magpie season has been very well publicised ensuring that the vast majority of people can now avoid or protect themselves from swooping magpies.

When dealing with magpie complaints the first action is to seek tolerance and understanding from the complainant. When taking complaints on magpies swooping staff try to educate the complainant and request people protect themselves with an umbrella, hat and glasses along with altering their route if possible to avoid the area. Signage is placed at the swooping location to warn people.

With all magpie swooping complaints Tweed Area staff follow the NPWS Policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People, which was adopted in 2003. As per the policy a risk assessment was undertaken concluding that it was highly likely the bird would strike causing injury again.

We have received a number of requests requesting alterations to the NPWS Policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People. If you wish I can add your concern to the register that will be provided to the Office of Environment and Heritage policy unit. The majority of requested amendments focus on removing the option of destruction from the policy and including the provision for staff to allow trapping and relocation.

Thank you for your email expressing your concerns.

Yours Sincerely

Damien

Dear Nora

Geoff was horrified when he heard about this case last week and immediately went and spoke to the Minister. Her office has been in contact with the local NPWS with the outcome that, for the present, no action is being taken.

The NPWS has the power to issue a destroy order if public safety is at risk and it is important that this power is retained. However, whether this power should have been invoked in this case is under discussion in the context of future policy directives.

Your comments have been passed on to the Minister’s office for inclusion in these discussions.

Regards

Jennifer

Response from Wildlife Carers Group

“Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for your quick response and concerns.

The continued education for the public to protect themselves in nesting season, and preferably avoid the route of nesting magpies altogether, until nesting season is over, along with NPWS’s warning signs of nesting magpies, should be adequate.

If any member of the public choose to ignore NPWS warning signs, and they get attacked, it is at their own risk, and NPWS should include that on the warning signs, then they cannot be held accountable.

You can pass our further comments to the Minister’s office as well, for inclusion in these discussions, to remove ‘destruction’ from the policy, but omit, ‘trap and relocate’, for the above reasons given.

Your response and copy of amendments to the NPWS policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People 2003, would be greatly appreciated.”

This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/ don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related, so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species.

These animals are still alive and awake, when going through the abattoir’s chute processing system, dropped on top of one another, through a swinging door, to go through to the next phase, with several possums piled on top of one another, into the same boxes, when delivered to the abattoir, (possums are extremely territorial,) females with joeys, butchered, and bashed to death. Shutting down this industry will help end acts of animal cruelty, and prevent this species from being driven to extinction. This species maintains a healthy, well balanced eco system.

Dingoes

Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be, who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty. Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 60-80 odd Dingoes that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.
