WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP NEWS; GALAH; AVOID BIOLAC; SNAKES; MOLONGLO; NEW TAMS MINISTER + more 17/3/13

While we haven’t been sending out our news and hard work regularly via email, we have been extremely busy. Click on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649024860&v=info
and Twitter
http://twitter.com/wildlifecarersg/
to read some of our updates.  Unfortunately not all of our hard work gets published on Facebook and Twitter either with the huge volume of work that we do.

Wildlife Carers Group phone has been ringing off the hook as usual with possibly some calls being lost.  If we haven’t returned your call you either forgot to leave your number, left the wrong number, we couldn’t decipher your message, or through congestion your call somehow got lost.

Please speak clearly and loudly into the microphone on your phone, tell us the reason why you are calling, leave your name and contact number, repeat your contact number twice.  We don’t have time to return calls to callers who fail to give us the reason for their call.  The call must be wildlife and animal welfare related.

AVOID BIOLAC FOR REARING MACROPODS, POSSUMS – SOFT FURRED WILDLIFE.

Photos: NORA PRESTON

Biolac has inappropriately been widely recommended to rear Macropods.

Unfortunately carers have found that the Eastern Grey Kangaroo Joeys have developed cataracts in both their eyes using Biolac.

Taronga Zoo has also found that Biolac is not suitable to rear Macropods or any other soft furred wildlife and recommend that Biolac only be used for Wombats or the stronger furred wildlife with similar texture fur as the wombat.  Personally, I would avoid using Biolac altogether.

I would therefore highly recommend that you avoid the use of Biolac for possums as well.

I have successfully continued to rear wildlife using Di-Vetelact that is simple to use. The only Wombaroo products I use is Granivore and Insectivore mix for birds. Carers that use Wombaroo powder for Macropods, Possums etc have been successful in rearing them.

Eastern Grey Kangaroo Joey reared using Biolac has formed cataracts in his eyes. This Joey will be having eye surgery to remove the cataracts.

Eyes should appear clear as this picture shows.

SNAKES 22/1/13

Photos: NORA PRESTON

After moving some stumps around into aviaries, the next day on 22/1/13 I saw an olivish green object in the bottom of the aviary with the same pattern on it as my garden hose. I thought that the last person in the aviary had dropped a thicker garden hose piece into the aviary and was about to bend down to retrieve it and return it to its rightful owner when it moved.

Even the local snakes seek refuge in my aviearies and want to feel safe from harm to live in my aviaries, slithering in and curling up in it to make a home for themselves.

EDENOPTERON KEITHCROOKI – 360 MILLION YEAR OLD NEW SPECIES OF FISH DISCOVERED

Photo: NORA PRESTON

Dr Gavin Young of ANU and 3 other researchers found the remains of this species in Eden in 2008. I snapped this photo of Gavin holding this specimen in June 2012. They worked hard to put the pieces together over a period of 5 years. In 2008 they found a fang that was 4 centimetres in length from an estimated 3 metre long fish while searching for remains of a toothless armoured fish in rocks near Eden. The researchers are waiting to hear back on whether or not they have been successful in their application for a permit/funding to continue their excavation in Eden to find the rest of the remains of this fish.  I’m sure that all the readers would agree that granting this permit would be of great historical educational value for science and the public.

“POSSUM TOASTS AUSTRALIA DAY in cheeky visit” by John Thistleton CANBERRA TIMES (CT) ARTICLE 29/1/13 NEWS P.3

Photos: NORA PRESTON

While I encourage assisting our native wildlife by feeding them, I only encourage to feed them with their natural diet, except for feeding lizards, possums etc to snakes and raptors etc, and as a supplement, fruit, good quality parrot mix etc.

Bread, toasted or otherwise, is definitely not recommended to be fed to any wildlife. Wildlife, and any other animals and birds cannot digest bread that will give them diarrhoea and slowly kill them.

I will investigate what the pest controllers who TAMS employ to catch the possums and remove them from the roof do with them, as commented by Daniel Iglesias in this same CT article.

The possums cannot just be removed from the roof and released. Possums are highly territorial and will kill or seriously injure one another fighting for their territory. A possum box must be installed close by to give the possum a new home. You can read about the Powerful Owl and view a photo of it at the Botanical Gardens on 22/9/07, referred to in the same CT article on Wildlife Carers Group website: http://wcg.awardspace.com, and click on the ‘Training’ link. ELEPHANTS – DID YOU KNOW?

We have been busy assisting in saving Elephants as well, both in the wild and in captivity.

  1. Usually in mammals tusks are enlarged canine teeth, but in elephants they are actually elongated incisors made of ivory and are essentially no different from other teeth. Ref: eleaid.com and Britannica.com
  2. Elephants usually have 26 teeth: the incisors, known as the tusks, 12 deciduous premolars, and 12 molars.
  3. These animals have several distinctive features, including a long proboscis or trunk used for many purposes, particularly for grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which serve as tools for moving objects and digging, and as weapons for fighting.

Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Traditionally, two species are recognised, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), although some evidence suggests that African bush elephants and African forest elephants are separate species (L. africana and L. cyclotis respectively). Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. They are the only surviving proboscideans; extinct species include mammoths and mastodons. The largest living terrestrial animals, male African elephants can reach a height of 4 m (13 ft) and weigh 7,000 kg (15,000 lb).

Elephants are herbivorous and can be found in different habitats including savannahs, forests, deserts and marshes. They prefer to stay near water. They are considered to be keystone species due to their impact on their environments. Other animals tend to keep their distance, and predators such as lions, tigers, hyenas and wild dogs usually target only the young elephants (or “calves”). Females (or “cows”) tend to live in family groups, which can consist of one female with her calves or several related females with offspring. The latter are led by the oldest cow, known as the matriarch. Elephants have a fission-fusion society in which multiple family groups come together to socialise. Males (or “bulls”) leave their family groups when they reach puberty, and may live alone or with other males. Adult bulls mostly interact with family groups when looking for a mate and enter a state of increased testosterone and aggression known as musth, which helps them gain dominance and reproductive success. Calves are the centre of attention in their family groups and rely on their mothers for as long as three years. Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild. They communicate by touch, sight, and sound; elephants use infrasound, and seismic communication over long distances. Elephant intelligence has been compared with that of primates and cetaceans. They appear to have self-awareness and show empathy for dying or dead individuals of their kind.

African elephants are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the Asian elephant is classed as endangered. One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. Other threats to wild elephants include habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. Elephants are used as working animals in Asia. In the past they were used in war; today, they are often put on display in zoos and circuses. Elephants are highly recognisable and have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature and popular culture. Ref: Wikipedia

MOLONGLO RIVER PARK/COOMBS RIVERSIDE DESIGN final PSP PRESENTATION 20/2/13

    Photos: NORA PRESTON

I attended the Molonglo River Park/Coombs Riverside design workshop on 20/2/13 reminding everyone that they were in breach of the EPBC Act 1999/NES plan.  Please click on this link to view WCG Submission on the EPBC Act 1999/NES Plan:  https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2012/09/26/wildlife-carers-group-submission-for-molonglo-and-north-weston-developments/.  I spoke with Shane Rattenbury TAMS minister later that day at a separate Conservation Council meeting reminding him of the Wildlife Carers Group submission on this matter that was handed to him at a Council meeting prior to the elections in 2012, and requested a response and confirmation that these developments have been scrapped. I further sent a follow up email on 25/2/13 to Shane Rattenbury requesting his response and confirmation that the Molonglo and North Weston developments have been permanently stopped. I have not yet received an acknowledgement or response to the email.

CONSERVATION COUNCIL COMMUNITY FORUM, GUEST SPEAKER SHANE RATTENBURY NEW ACT MINISTER FOR TERRITORY AND MUNICIPAL SERVICES (TAMS) 20/2/13

I attended the Conservation Council community forum on 20/2/13 and spoke with Shane Rattenbury on the matter of the Cypress trees being removed in the old Weston CIT site without any consultation and requested an explanation. I further sent a follow up email on 25/2/13 requesting an explanation to which I have not received an acknowledgement or response to.

I also raised the unlawful entry and theft of my wildlife on 10/8/12 https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2012/09/28/wildlife-carers-group-news-work-experience-student-rspca-cruelty-more-live-export-animal-cruelty-28912/ and again demanded a public apology and the return of my wildlife alive and asked him where they were. I also reminded him of the small part of the damages bill that I have already sent and asked for that immediate payment and that I was defamed publicly with vicious lies not once but twice by TAMS, also in 2007/2008 in the attempt to destroy my reputation, and expect compensation for damages, defamation, vicious harassment, unlawful entry and theft. I have been demanding that all staff involved in the unlawful entry and theft of my wildlife be permanently banned and terminated from their jobs for abusing their jobs and taxpayers money to run a smear campaign against me. I sent a follow up email on 25/2/13 requesting the same to which I have not received an acknowledgement or response to.

I discussed the Kangaroos and to end the violent unlawful killing, to amend the Acts and Policies that govern the unlawful violent killing according to Wildlife Carers Group submissions, and to amend our licence, etc. I sent a follow up email on 25/2/13 requesting the same to which I have not received an acknowledgement or response to.

I have been busy taking legal action, typing up submissions, including for judicial improvements, strengthening the Human Rights Act that expired in January 2013, attending meetings, and emailing letters to assist in ending violent kangaroo killings in other states, to prevent the kangaroo commercial industry from starting up in other states, saving our marinelife and their habitat, to assist to stop the coal seam gas, which we have had some success in, with the Environment Minister Tony Burke introducing legislation in parliament on 13/3/13, including strict federal conditions on the coal seam gas proposals on their impact on our water tables. The list goes on of all of the rest of my hard work on other matters as well, some of which that may be seen on Facebook and Twitter.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan%E2%80%A6/comment-page-1/(this page may now be closed to leave space for UC new students interviews)
don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays.

Please check out this link: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx
that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the’letters to the editor’ section titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’,that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related

SEE the so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders),causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and can offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 90 odd Dingoes, population estimation as of 28-29 August 2011, (since the mismanaged Fraser Island fire by the Qld government, this Dingo population has more than likely dropped dramatically), that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced ecosystem.

CHIEF MINISTER DEMANDS A PUBLIC APOLOGY, SO DID I BUT STILL HAVEN’T GOT IT

We recently saw the Chief Minister demand a public apology on TV News last week.

Wildlife Carers Group demanded a public apology and the immediate return of our Wildlife alive, that were paid for out of our own pocket for phone calls, responding/returning calls, rescue, treatment and proper care, for the unlawful entry and acts of animal cruelty during the unlawful stealing of Wildlife Carers Group Wildlife on Friday 10/8/12 by the rspca and tams and the police who allowed the rspca to unlawfully trespass onto my propery, and for unlawfully stealing my Wildlife that were under my proper care.

The chief/tams minister receptionist bluntly told me that she was not going to give it to me, and refused to let me speak with the chief/tams minister to sort this mess out.

I have written several emails, made several phone calls, and I am demanding a public apology for the unlawful entry and stealing of my wildlife on 10/8/12, defamation, and vicious harassment by the police, tams and the rspca to the chief/tams minister, and to the police requesting that they charge, arrest and prosecute the rspca and tams, including the police involved, for their unlawful entry and unlawful stealing of my wildlife, ongoing vicious harassment and defamatory lies, and demand the immediate return of my unlawfully stolen wildlife alive.

I am further demanding a compensation payout for all of the ongoing vicious harassment, unlawful entry and unlawful stealing of my wildlife, and the ongoing defamatory lies going on about me.

Our wildlife are not there for the rspca to profit on by selling them, or to unnecessarily kill them because they do not have any understanding, knowledge or expertise in wildlife.

Unreleasable healthy wildlife need to be kept to be able to calm down other new incoming species, of the same species.

The sick need to be treated and if unreleasable can also be kept for the same purposes.

Unreleasable healthy wildlife are also needed in educating the public who are being trained in wildlife rehabilitation, and for the requested talks given.

Due to the ongoing incompetence of tams in their handling of sending out wildlife rehabilitation licence renewal applications, and the sending out of record books, and the defamatory lies about me sent out in letters to Wildlife Carers Group carers in 2008, Wildlife Carers Group has been requesting a public apology for years, and is still requesting a Public Apology with the confession of departmental error, our licence to be a special conditional licence for our independent group, with the instructions/conditions of an open licence that does not expire, no record keeping for tams, full term rehabilitation of ALL sick, injured, orphaned native wildlife, no carers list to tams, and wildlife inspections undertaken by Wildlife Carers Group.

Due to the ongoing annual acts of animal cruelty committed by tams and their shooters under the rspca, and the 30+ other permits handed out to kill protected native kangaroos, etc, all year round, Wildlife Carers Group has further requested that all applications for native Wildlife killing licences and Wildlife Rehabilitation Licences to be processed by Wildlife Carers Group.

All native Wildlife are protected, with the Wildlife protection laws constantly breached under this government and the rspca.

Wildlife Carers Group is the only ACT body that enforces the Wildlife protection laws and disallows protected native wildlife to be killed.

SMEAR CAMPAIGNS RUN BY TAMS

Just as my name was defamed with lies and vicious harassment, unlawful entry into my property and the unlawful stealing of my wildlife by the police, the rspca and tams with the intention to run a smear campaign against me for taking the conservator of flora and fauna to court for animal cruelty and the ongoing unlawful violent killing of protected native wildlife, the activists also had a smear campaign run against them by tams for exposing their animal cruelty, during tams unlawful annual violent killing of protected native wildlife during May and June 2012 on the nature reserves, and outside the reserves, with both actions against me and the activists being paid by the taxpayers, taxpayers money abused, and those responsible for these unlawful actions abusing their jobs.

The activists were accused of cutting the fences where the Eastern Bettongs were released, endangering their lives.

Our informant has advised us, that at no time were the Eastern Bettongs in danger of escaping or having predators get into the enclosure where they were kept, since at no time were those particular fences cut.

Instead, the fences cut were in another area where the Eastern Bettongs had no access to.

As a result of this smear campaign and defamatory lies about the activists, the ACT Animal Liberation President wrote a letter to the Chief Minister warning her of defamation.

I have written several emails demanding a public apology for the unlawful entry and stealing of my wildlife on 10/8/12, defamation, and vicious harassment by the police, tams and the rspca to the chief/tams minister, and to the police requesting that they charge, arrest and prosecute the rspca and tams, including the police involved, for their unlawful entry and unlawful stealing of my wildlife, vicious harassment and defamation.

In order to run this smear campaign against the activists, tams would have been responsible in cutting the fences, not only unlawfully costing the taxpayers over $200,000 for the unlawful killing of protected wildlife, torturing them to death, when the final poll results showing that the majority of 56% opposed the killing, with only a small minority of 39% agreeing with the unlawful killing, tams government cost the taxpayers a further $5000 to repair their own damage that they caused to the fences.

Then you can add on the damage caused in the nature reserves by placing hoofed cattle into the nature reserves, completely misusing and abusing the word ‘nature’ reserves, that is intended for native wildlife and not introduced sheep or cattle, digging of pits, riding around on quad bikes, driving around in 4WD’s.

Further add on the cost to taxpayers to unlawfully trespass onto my property and to unlawfully steal my protected native wildlife by the police, tams and the rspca.

Your guess is as good as mine of the huge cost that these incompetent government departments cost the public because of arrogance and ignorance, and refusing to work with experts, incompetent government departments who never bother looking into the future on what their actions are going to cost our environment, our eco system, our native wildlife flora and fauna, and most of all, the taxpayers, because they are too busy running smear campaigns, at your cost.

Another letter sent to the rspca for the unlawful entry and stealing of my wildlife on 10/8/12 and the defamatory lies about me that appeared in the Canberra Times on 11/8/12.

I have removed their name and email address for their privacy, and I would like to make a correction to ‘….the rspca officer…’, para 2.  There were more than 1 rspca staff members unlawfully trespassing.  I ordered everyone off my property, and ordered everyone to leave my protected wildlife alone and where they were housed, that they all ignored.

Dear Mr Linke,

According to the Canberra Times report, the RSPCA was involved in the raid on Nora Preston’s house to remove birds she had there. I presume you would have entered under the Animal Welfare Act 1992. This being the case, according to Ms Preston, it seems that you and your officers are not aware of the requirements of section 81 ‘Powers of entry and search’.

When she became aware that the RSPCA officer was there, she asked him or her to leave, which was ignored. Would you not agree that this is an act of trespass and the removal of the birds, which were exempt from licence requirements, theft and conversion?

I am surprised that the RSPCA would involve itself in such a precipitous action in tandem with the TAMS wildlife Officer who also appears to be rather ignorant of the requirements of the law, namely the Nature Conservation Act.

Ms Preston has had over 30 years of experience in animal care and behaviour. The RSPCA needs to work with the experts in wildlife care, instead of defaming and attacking them. The Canberra Times report made your actions sound like a turf war and perhaps it is.

Next time you bed down with the Government, particularly TAMS, you should ensure that the bureaucrats actually know what they are doing and that they have sufficient justification. The fact that you receive Government money suggests that you will side with the Government and do what it wants instead of being concerned with animal welfare..

……

To read this article that refutes everything that the recent Canberra Times article false allegations claim on 11/8/12, and unlawful action of illegal trespassing and stealing of animals taken against me by the tams dept, the rspca and the police on 10/8/12, because I took the conservator of flora and fauna to court to stop the unlawful violent killing of the kangaroos and to make the required changes to the Nature Conservation Act 1980, The Kangaroo Management Plan that is full of science fiction and no scientific evidence of their claims made against the Kangaroos of damage, destroying endangered species that is caused by the government, hoofed cattle, quad bikes, digging pits, 4WD’s, shooters, and the Pests Control Management Plan Strategy that needs to have all native wildlife omitted from the Plan, please click on this link: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/canberra-city-of-animal-lovers-20120714-222rk.html

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/

don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx , with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the’letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

There are more links on youtube to show the facts on the extreme cruelty committed to our native protected macropods.

TWEED HEADS LICENCE ISSUED TO SHOOT MAGPIE CANCELLED.

Response from Wildlife Carers Group

“Dear Damien,

Thank you for your quick response.

It would be an acceptable outcome, for the ‘destruction’ to be removed from the ‘NPWS policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People 2003‘.

However, interfering with the nesting birds, by removing and relocating them, is not an option.

Magpies are extremely territorial, and will kill each other, if you relocate a nest and parents into another Magpies territory.

The parent cannot be trapped and removed from its nest and young, and partner either.

Magpies work together to feed their young, and again, the parent will be killed by other territorial Magpies.

The nesting season is short.

The continued education for the public to protect themselves in nesting season, and preferably avoid the route of nesting magpies altogether, until nesting season is over, along with your warning signs of nesting magpies, should be adequate.

If any member of the public choose to ignore your warning signs, and they get attacked, it is at their own risk, and you should include that on your warning signs, then you cannot be held accountable.

You can add our concerns to the register as well, that will be provided to the Office of Environment and Heritage policy unit, to remove ‘destruction’ from the policy, but omit, ‘trap and relocate’, for the above reasons given.

Your response and copy of amendments to the NPWS policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People 2003, would be greatly appreciated.”

Subject: NSW national Parks and Wildlife Services order to shoot Tweed Heads Magpie

Dear Ms Preston

Thank you for your email regarding the magpie at Industry Drive in South Tweed Heads. I note that the phone number you were given was incorrect. For future reference our office number is 6670 8600.

As you have noted the licence you referred to has been cancelled. Through the coverage of this story the magpie season has been very well publicised ensuring that the vast majority of people can now avoid or protect themselves from swooping magpies.

When dealing with magpie complaints the first action is to seek tolerance and understanding from the complainant. When taking complaints on magpies swooping staff try to educate the complainant and request people protect themselves with an umbrella, hat and glasses along with altering their route if possible to avoid the area. Signage is placed at the swooping location to warn people.

With all magpie swooping complaints Tweed Area staff follow the NPWS Policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People, which was adopted in 2003. As per the policy a risk assessment was undertaken concluding that it was highly likely the bird would strike causing injury again.

We have received a number of requests requesting alterations to the NPWS Policy on Management of Native Birds that Show Aggression to People. If you wish I can add your concern to the register that will be provided to the Office of Environment and Heritage policy unit. The majority of requested amendments focus on removing the option of destruction from the policy and including the provision for staff to allow trapping and relocation.

Thank you for your email expressing your concerns.

Yours Sincerely

Damien

Dear Nora

Geoff was horrified when he heard about this case last week and immediately went and spoke to the Minister. Her office has been in contact with the local NPWS with the outcome that, for the present, no action is being taken.

The NPWS has the power to issue a destroy order if public safety is at risk and it is important that this power is retained. However, whether this power should have been invoked in this case is under discussion in the context of future policy directives.

Your comments have been passed on to the Minister’s office for inclusion in these discussions.

This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/ don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related, so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage.

Possum Abattoir – Lenah Game Meats, Tasmania —EngageMedia

These animals are still alive and awake, when going through the abattoir’s chute processing system, dropped on top of one another, through a swinging door, to go through to the next phase, with several possums piled on top of one another, into the same boxes, when delivered to the abattoir, (possums are extremely territorial,) females with joeys, butchered, and bashed to death. Please Help stop these extreme acts of animal cruelty and export. You can help stop these extreme acts of animal cruelty to these possums by adding the above link to the possum abattoir and lodging your submissions by 23/4/10, to wta@environment.gov.au, wildlife.enq@dpipwe.tas.gov.auand click on link http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/invitecomment/brushtail-possum.html Submissions are now closed. Shutting down this industry will help end acts of animal cruelty, and prevent this species from being driven to extinction. This species maintains a healthy, well balanced eco system.

Dingoes

Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be, who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty. Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 60-80 odd Dingoes that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.
