The Ghan Serves Kangaroo Meat

As most people are aware, Steve Irwin was spokeperson on the Ghan train. Over three days, the Ghan runs from Adelaide, Alice Springs and Darwin. One of the advertising features of the Ghan is that it serves native foods. For the three years Steve was involved, they wouldn’t serve kangaroo meat. Recently Terri Irwin did a trip on the Ghan and found they were now serving kangaroo meat. She wrote to the Ghan managment, and received a very poor response. So we are asking our Wildlife Bytes readers to write to the Ghan management and express their concern too. The address is Tony Braxton-Smith, CEO, Ground Floor, 422 King William Street, Adelaide, South Australia. Their email address is salesenquiries@greatsouthernrail.com.au If you can, please find the time to write and express your concern, and the fact that you won’t be using the Ghan while they are serving kangaroo meat. We will be writing a very long letter to them. If you are overseas and contemplating travelling to Australia, please write also. *WPAA

Elephants

Inhumane elephant training in the US for movies and circuses, using steel hooked rods, to beat them with, belting babies over the head, for no good reason, stun guns.

While it is nice to see animals in films, if it is not in their natural environment, and behaving naturally, without being tortured to perform, then it is not worthwhile to see them at all.

These are not natural positions for elephants with their massive weight, you can hear the elephants screaming in pain, these inhumane industries need to be shut down world wide, including animal using circuses, click on this link to view video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=tvW-KB5kvIQ

Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, http://www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/ don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

This statement is admitting to the flawed, dishonest kangaroo management plan, and russell watkinson’s media release, on Friday 18/6/10, that blames the kangaroos for driving legless lizards, earless dragons, etc, and the deteriorating grasslands and woodlands to extinction, by eating all the grasses, when fletcher admits that the native grasses are not threatened by the kangaroos, but by human activity, including toxic sprays.

Please check out this link http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, that was in the Canberra times on 17/10/09, that completely refutes the allegations against the roos destroying grasslands, that was sent to maxine cooper, that were also ignored.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/roo-best-custodian-for-some-plants/1652005.aspx, with a more recent article in the Chronicle in the ‘letters to the editor’ section, titled ‘culling controversy’ p.23, 14/6/11.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related, so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species. Native protected animals called pests, the very same native animals that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system. The code of practice that the shooter refers to is inhumane, and unacceptable, as witnessed in this video footage. Kangaroos are not fit for human or dog consumption, heavily contaminated with various diseases/harmful bacterias, e.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, toxoplasmosis, preserved illegally with sulphur dioxide that causes thiamine deficiency, (a white crystalline solid forming part of the vitamin B complex, C12H17CIN4OS; a vitamin (B1), required by the nervous system, absence of which causes beri-beri and other disorders), causing death, intake of pesticide spraying to control locusts, etc. Keep watching till it stops, keep an eye on the timer, next to the speaker symbol, length 10:59.

Terminating the rangers from their jobs, who are responsible for the inhumane treatment of dingoes on Fraser Island, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSaknF6Wnw&feature=youtu.be, who are starving them to death, mismanaging them, mistreating them will prevent driving these spectacular native wildlife species to extinction, and help end acts of animal cruelty. Changing the Qld government legislation and constitution, to humanely conserve this species, and their habitat. Erecting GIVE WAY to DINGOES/WILDLIFE Signs. We can see their marine life up and down the Qld coast, however, the only unique sighting that Fraser Island can boast about, and offer to the tourists, is the pure breed native Dingoes, once the last 90 odd Dingoes that are left on the Island are driven to extinction, through arrogance, mismanagement and mistreatment, Fraser Island will have nothing left to offer to the huge tourist trade it currently holds, which will end Fraser Island tourism. This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

BARN OWL+ECHIDNA+WOOLIES REPLY ON ROO MEAT+BAN INHUMANE SHEEP SLAUGHTER IN SA & VIC

BARN OWL + ECHIDNA CALLS + ANOTHER RESPONSE FROM WOOL IES ON KANGAROO MEAT

BARN OWL

Wildlife Carers Group received calls about a Barn Owl in a barn in Fyshwick, with the occupants wanting to have the Owl removed.

They phoned Canberra connect and got the rangers, and to my horror, informed me that they wanted to go out there and shoot the bird, so they rang Wildlife Carers Group.

I stated that shooting the Owl was not an option, and gave the occupants advice that they are very lucky to have the Barn Owl, since it will get rid of all their rodents that they don’t want.

I informed them that the Barn Owls usually live in barns, which is how they got their name in the first place, and sleep during the day, and hunt at night. The bird may have found an area where it can fly in and out of the barn, that is perched very high up in the shed.

I did also advise that they can open up the barn, although it may be a large working shed, rather than a barn, leave the shed, and watch from a safe distance, to see if the bird will fly out.

If the Owl didn’t fly out, I suggested that they just leave the bird alone, and let it sleep through the day, and come and go through the night.

ECHIDNAS

Wildlife Carers Group has received calls about echidnas in front yards, back yards, etc.

Our advice is to leave the echidnas alone, since if they are females, they more than likely have puggles, (baby echidnas) in a den somewhere, and are travelling around for 2 or 3 days to have a good feed, and will then find their way back to their young to feed them.

If the echidnas are moved from the area that they are in, they will lose their sense of direction, and will not find their way back to their puggles, that will then starve to death without their mum.

ANOTHER RESPONSE FROM WOOLIES-I HAVEN’T RESPONDED BACK YET

Woolworths Staff just don’t read the facts, and take serious notice of the test results, that show that they are buying and selling contaminated kangaroo meat, yet alone taking into consideration that these animals are tortured to death, and are being driven to extinction.

Dear Nora Preston,

Re: Your query to Woolworths Supermarkets CN-001100966

Thank you for contacting us again with regards to your concerns with Woolworths selling Kangaroo products.

Kangaroo meat for human consumption has been available from a wide number of retailers across Australia for many years now in response to strong customer demand.

Kangaroo meat products are produced, stored and transported in accordance with the Australian Standard for Hygienic Production of Game Meat for Human Consumption and the Game, and Rabbit

Meat Orders. This standard is consistent with the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s Code of Hygienic Practice for Meat – reflecting internationally agreed standards.

The Kangaroo Industry in Australia is highly regulated, with many Government Departments and Regulatory Departments overseeing the industry and the processors involved. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) monitor industry’s compliance with the Australian standard.

Kangaroo for sale within Woolworths is supplied by suppliers who are fully accredited to the Woolworths Quality Assurance (WQA) standard as well as the industry standard listed above. The

WQA is a proprietary third party audited verification standard. Full compliance to all facets of the
standard is audited twice per year and is a requirement for ongoing supply to Woolworths.

All refrigeration used in the field is certified fit to contain food for human consumption, and is fully licensed and regularly inspected by the relevant state health authorities.

Thank you again for contacting us regarding your concerns. Please be assured that Woolworths takes very seriously the health and safety of it’s customers in providing only safe food products for sale.

Yours Faithfully,

ANIMALS AUSTRALIA ASKS FOR EVERYONE’S HELP:

http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/PIMC-non-stun-slaughter/

The last waking moments of an animal raised and killed for meat is not something many people like to think about. But at the very least, Australians expect animals to be stunned insensible to pain and spared from the terror of fully conscious slaughter.

This basic protection is a legal requirement in Australia, however some VIC & SA abattoirs have been given exemptions to cut the throats of live sheep without stunning.
Right now we have a chance to end this cruel practice.

Last month the Primary Industries Standing Committee received messages from some 20,000 Animals Australia supporters before they met to discuss whether to remove these exemptions. The PISC have provided their advice to the primary industries ministers, who will now meet this Friday to make the final decision.

Caring Australians know that subjecting an animal to a terrifying death is unacceptable, and deep down, the Government does too. In 2006 Animals Australia documented the atrocious slaughter of cattle in Egypt whose leg tendons were slashed in an attempt to disable them. So evident was their suffering that the Australian Government immediately suspended live exports to Egypt to prevent Australian animals from enduring such cruelty. But to cut the throat of a live animal — to sever major nerves, muscles and arteries — is arguably even crueller, yet continues in a small number of sheep abattoirs in our own backyard.

Animals Australia has been working hard to stop this brutal practice, but right now we need your help. Please click here to send an instant message to show our ministers that the public is watching and demanding that they use their power to close this cruel legal loophole once and for all.

Since there are only days to act, please forward this important message to friends and family. On behalf of the animals, thank you.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP REPORT ON BLACK SWANS AND CYGNETS

On 23/10/11 we visited the 2 Black Swans and their 3 Cygnets, Cygnus atratus, finding the Swans off the nest, that has almost broken up and is slowly disappearing into the pond that is in the middle of the Coranderrk St roundabout in the City Reid area.

Unfortunately it appears that the Swans have lost half of their Cygnets, usually laying 6-9 eggs, with only the last 3 Cygnets that have hatched surviving.

Sunday 23/10/11 Coranderrk St roundabout, 2 Swans and 3 Cygnets

Wildlife Carers Group receives a lot of phone calls, with our phones getting very heavily congested. When the calls go to voicemail, it means that we are busy on another call.

We have received some abusive voice messages that have been made in the middle of the night, at approx 2am and 4am.

Please remember that Wildlife Carers Group is run solely by volunteers. If the calls go to voicemail, please leave a polite message stating the reason for your call, for injured, sick or orphaned wildlife, etc, please do not leave any abusive messages, and only use the Wildlife Carers Group mobile number for sick, injured, orphaned wildlife, or wildlife related issues, wildlife work experience, animal welfare, etc.

Please only use the Wildlife Carers Group mobile number for emergencies for sick, injured, orphaned native wildlife, in the middle of the night.

Wildlife Carers Group received a call for a chewed up koala, on 23/10/11. The finder of the Koala took the Koala to a vet, who appeared to be too frightened to handle the Koala, so advised the finder to return the injured Koala back to her property and release it where she found it.

Thankfully the finder ignored this advice by the vet, and took the Koala to a Koala Society, where the Koala received treatment and antibiotics.

If vets are unfamiliar in handling certain injured wildlife, advise the finders to take the injured wildlife to someone else who is familiar with handling the wildlife, to ensure proper treatment.

It may be worthwhile for vets to have a list of wildlife experts for certain wildlife.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT IN 2009/2010.

WISHING YOU A VERY SAFE AND HAPPY YEAR FOR 2011.

RESPONSES BETWEEN WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP AND WOOLWORTHS ON THEIR SALE OF CONTAMINATED MEAT FOR PET AND HUMAN CONSUMPTION

RESPONSES BETWEEN WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP AND WOOLWORTHS ON THEIR SALE OF CONTAMINATED KANGAROO MEAT FOR PET AND HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Your response sounded like a dishonest government department’s response. You failed to respond to the contaminated Kangaroo meat that you are selling both for pet and human consumption that we tested.

Did you click on the links that I sent, or copy and paste the links into your browser to view the contaminated meat that we tested, bought from woolworths?

These links also had further links in them that showed the extreme acts of animal cruelty that these kangaroos are put through before, and during slaughter, while they are still alive. The government’s lies about the kangaroo being over abundant are just that, unbelievable lies. The government does not count the Kangaroos, and they are being inhumanely, driven to extinction. The government does not have an expert panel on Kangaroos, they are unqualified, inexperienced, with no knowledge on the species, with the government abusing taxpayers money paying these panels/advisory committees, and so called government scientists, and that includes the rspca.

I personally have been around since the early 1980’s, rehabilitating, studying, researching, teaching. Conservation is extremely important, and the way that so called government scientists in ecology are taught these days, is not by experts, but taught by those who have been taught wrongfully by farmers, etc, and taught that Kangaroos are a menace, a pest, when in fact, Kangaroos maintain, a healthy, well balanced eco system.

The government code of practice is not adhered to, as the links I sent you showed. Seeing is believing.

Listening to, and reading utter rubbish by the government and the kangaroo commercial industry, will not prevent this important species from extinction, will not restore sanity, and humanity, will not prevent any acts of animal cruelty. These people in the inhumane kangaroo commercial industry can find other jobs, that does not include animal cruelty, killing, and driving our protected native wildlife to extinction.

We urge that you place a total ban on all kangaroo products, throughout all your outlets, including Big W, etc.

The rspca have no credibility, and do not prevent acts of animal cruelty, please click on or copy and paste this link into your browser:

Subject: Woolworths Product Feedback – Kangaroo

Good Morning Nora,

Thank you for contacting us with regards to the Kangaroo Meat used in our Fresh Petfood & Human Consumption Range.

As you may be aware the kangaroo industry represents an international model of wise and sustainable wildlife utilisation. It is worth AUD $270 million per year and directly employs 4000 people. Human predation is a natural part of kangaroo biology, people have been harvesting kangaroos for over 40,000 years in Australia. The modern day commercial harvest has been utilizing kangaroos for over 40 years. During that time populations have fluctuated, principally in response to seasonal conditions.

With a population in 2009 of 27 million, kangaroos are actually amongst the most abundant large wild land mammal on earth and their numbers are increasing each year. Kangaroo populations are estimated by State governments every year to determine a sustainable quota which is usually between 12-15% of total population. All harvesters must undergo training and assessment by regulatory authorities, be licensed to them and report monthly on what kangaroos they take and from where. It is a condition of all kangaroo harvest licenses that they be taken according to a strict Animal Welfare Code of Practice. This Code is available at http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/wild-harvest/kangaroo/practice.html. Failure to adhere to this Code can result in significant fines and loss of licence (and therefore income) for kangaroo harvesters. The Code was reviewed recently by an independent committee including non-government animal welfare NGO’s including the RSPCA and found to be best practice.

We will continue to support and work with the industry through our trade partners in supplying our customer with a Fresh Petfood offer and alternatives to traditional forms of Red Meat.

Thank you for your time and I hope this answers your query,

Regards,

Woolworths Limited

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your quick response, we greatly appreciate it.

While you write that you have noted our concerns, and the fact that all kangaroo meat that you sell, for pet and human consumption is contaminated, and unfit for pet and human

consumption, are we to understand that you have placed a total ban on all kangaroo products?

We would like to ask you to place a permanent total ban on all kangaroo products throughout all your outlets.

Your earliest response is greatly appreciated in this matter.

In this article, interviewed on 15/4/10, www.nowuc.com.au/2010/05/27/kangaroo-plan…/comment-page-1/ don fletcher from tams says that kangaroos are not the main problem and in fact ‘native grasses’ are not threatened with extinction, but other animals and plants are, and that “the biggest ‘contributor’ to the loss of the natural treeless grasslands of our region has been agriculture (by far)”.

Please click on this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Dingoes

9/10/11: For All Coles outlets:

Good Afternoon,

As Founding President of Wildlife Carers Group, I would like to urge Coles not to purchase and sell any kangaroo products, placing a complete ban on all kangaroo products, throughout all Coles/K-mart outlets.

Two tinned pet food companies who correctly label their tins as using Kangaroo meat are Purina, and Nature’s Gift, apparently there are other companies who use kangaroo meat, but fail to correctly label their products.

Wildlife groups are investigating on who else uses kangaroo meat in their products, but fail to correctly label their tins, etc.

Wildlife Carers Group recently bought kangaroo meat from Coles, that is used for both pet and human consumption, and tested them, finding all of the kangaroo meat to be severely contaminated.

I would further like to include these links for you to click on, or copy and paste links into your browser, and to read, to further educate you on the fact that kangaroo meat is not fit for pet or human consumption, and to read our test results.

This inhumane industry is driving our native protected Kangaroos to extinction.

WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP MONITORING SWANS AND CYGNETS, ACT + KANGAROO MEAT

NEWS ALERT – WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP MONITORING SWANS AND CYGNETS AT ROUNDABOUT-DRIVE CAREFULLY.

Wildlife Carers Group is extremely busy, with the phone becoming quite congested, so please be patient with your calls.

Wildlife Carers Group has been busy monitoring the Swans and their Cygnets, with 4 Cygnets counted on Friday 7/10/11.

On Saturday 8/10/11, as it was getting dark, we visited the Swans and Cygnets, and unfortunately this time we parked in the stones around the pond.

Bad idea, don’t park in the stones, you’ll get stuck and ruin your car.

Female Swan sitting on nest protecting her Cygnets and we suspect, more eggs.

Male Swan providing food

Please remember to drive carefully around the large roundabout heading up to the Reid CIT and the Convention Centre, to avoid hitting these Swans and their Cygnets, should they decide to move across the busy roads to get to the park near the lake.

Wildlife Bytes Australia has sent this information and is requesting that everyone write to the relevant government departments to force correct labeling on pet food, by the companies using kangaroo meat, to show that they are using kangaroo meat:

“I object to the fact that kangaroo meat is not labeled on pet foods. I object to buying pet food with kangaroo meat as I am morally and ethically opposed to the mass utilization of our wildlife, the harassment and cruelty involved. Up to one million young and baby kangaroo are simply bashed to death or die slowly from this ugly trade. I do not want to support it in any way. However, currently it is not necessary to label the products as having this meat. I know that Purina are using it, and Nature’s Best. I would like to see proper labeling on ALL pet meat so wildlife supporters can avoid these products. Thank you,” *

DOMESTIC ANIMAL SERVICES VISIT – ATTEMPTING TO SAVE A DOG FROM DEATH ROW

DOMESTIC ANIMAL SERVICES VISIT – ATTEMPTING TO SAVE A DOG FROM DEATH ROW

On Tuesday 4/10/11, Wildlife Carers Group, and a member of the public visited Domestic Animal Services, (DAS), in order to save a small dog from death row today, Wednesday 5/10/11.

Every Wednesday, all dogs are killed, regardless on when the dogs arrived at DAS, whether it was on the same day as the killing takes place, or a week ago.

Their excuse is, they are strays, or they have not past the temperament test.

You cannot test a dog for their temperament, just because a dog does not take to whoever does the so called temperament test, does not fail the dog, it fails the handler.

Chances are, that with the right person for that dog that is unnecessarily killed, their temperament will be totally different, will be compatible.

How do you know the dogs are strays within hours of death day. You simply cannot tell.

We arrived at DAS at approx 3.15pm, to find the gates and the front door wide open.

So in we went, stopped to speak to a male behind the counter and asked him if we could go through to save a small dog from death row the next day.

The male showed absolutely no compassion for the poor dogs about to be unnecessarily killed, to help us save a dog from death row, making one excuse after another, not to let us through.

First he said that they were closed, the gates were open because the police had just left who had to change the clocks for them, then, the next excuse was, that the till was closed down.

I pleaded with him, and then asked him to atleast give the member of the public the dog if the till is closed, so that we can atleast save one dog from death row, and we will send through a donation that will pay for the dog when the till is open.

The staff member would not budge, so all the dogs were killed.

No more wasting and abusing taxpayers money in killing dogs.

Spend the money on expanding DAS, to allow housing for more dogs, and making it more dog friendly.

The one and only padlock left in the after hours pens, has disappeared, with the bucket of water, still in one of the pens, that small dogs cannot reach.

Failing to provide strong padlocks to lock each single dog into the after hours pens will not prevent people from placing more than one dog into the same after hours pen. Placing more than one dog in the same pen may cause injuries and or death to one or each dog in the same pen.

I didn’t check whether or not the latches have been fixed to operate properly, since there were no padlocks.

The after hours pens were at least clean.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

Please click on this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn3c8EcNRk&feature=related, so called controlled government butchering, you will note that the kangaroos are still alive when hung up, suffering, AND BEING TORTURED TO DEATH, the male is laughing at the cruelty he has just inflicted on this kangaroo, a joey stomped to death, even the child stomps on it as he walks past following his father, orphaned joeys hopping around, left to starve to death, a joey bashed till its eyes popped out, but is still alive, suffering, a prolonged death, and the male admitting that these are protected species.

AMENDMENTS – RSPCA – DRAFT ACT PEST ANIMAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGY 2011-2021

Amendments – DRAFT ACT PEST ANIMAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGY 2011-2021

Amendments

The rspca do not prevent cruelty to animals.

The unnecessary inhumane slaughter of innocent native kangaroos from the 2008 bnts site, that the rspca encouraged, stood by and watched the inhumane herding, and slaughter, failing to stop acts of animal cruelty.

2008 bnts cruelty under the watchful eyes of the rspca, failing to prevent cruelty to animals.

2008 bnts cruelty as roos collied into poles, under the watchful eyes of the rspca, failing to prevent cruelty to animals.

2008 bnts cruelty, as roos die from shock, under the watchful eyes of the rspca

2008 bnts cruelty, roo head jammed between steel poles, left to the male, under the watchful eyes of the rspca

2008 bnts cruelty, staff driving over the so called protected native grasslands, earless dragons, legless lizards, etc. under the watchful eyes of the rspca.

2008 bnts cruelty invasive collars not fit for any animal, and mouth forced shut preventing the animal from breathing, under the watchful eyes of the rspca, who fail to prevent acts of animal cruelty.

2008 bnts site deprived of water, healthy long grasslands, before the bnts inhumane slaughter, damage to grasslands, killing other protected threatened species, by government staff, and not roos.

The rspca are to be removed from all advisory committees, expert advisory committees, stake holders, with a complete overhaul of the government advisors, removed from their jobs.

Taxpayers money is being wasted on unnecessary killing, and on paying those who direct the unnecessary killing, that includes paying those who have no experience or knowledge on advisory committees, expert advisory committees, and stake holders.

Paralysing drugs – Did the government use a paralysing drug for darting, that

allowed the animals to be fully conscious while being killed?

The use of paralysing drugs is inhumane and is to be banned.

Currawongs – Currawongs are not responsible for spreading weeds, humans are by firstly allowing them to be introduced, when humans cycle, walk, run or jog anywhere, will cause the spreading of weeds, along with the wind, nature.

Currawongs help to eradicate introduced species such as blackbirds, Indian mynas, starlings, sparrows, etc.

The rspca – fail with their so called science, with their advertising, being deceitful, e.g. their recent ad demanding everyone to leave kittens alone that people find near their homes, and to call the rspca, and that everyone needs their mother. The rspca kill kittens and if they find their mother, the rspca will also kill their mother, since they label these kittens and cats as being wild/feral.

The rspca ordered these kittens to be killed, so the finder of these kittens rang Wildlife Carers Group. They were so tiny that they fit into the palm of my hands. These beautiful animals would be dead now, if it wasn’t for Wildlife Carers Group stepping in and taking them. The kittens live indoors with a lot of toys and a kitty litter.

The rspca do not educate truthfully, falsify figures, falsify reasons for killing, such as making up diseases that the animals do not actually have to try and justify killing them, especially when questioned, do not prevent cruelty to animals, e.g. placing their names on chicken sold, that have been tortured to death, etc, purely for money, and the only advertising that they do is to deceitfully make money for themselves, so that they can continue to kill everything off. The rspca staff have no knowledge or expertise, yet alone understanding animals and wildlife, in animal welfare, animal ethics, or wildlife, to be named as expert advisers, stakeholders, yet alone to sit on and be paid taxpayers money, in grasslands, etc advisory committees, etc.

Unfortunately the experience with the rspca is just to do what is convenient for the people, and not what is right for the animals, wildlife, habitat, the environment, and conservation.

The rspca need to be giving animals away for FREE to good suitable homes, to prevent the unnecessary killing of innocent vulnerable healthy animals.

Wildlife Carers Group put themselves out there, into the community, attend meetings that will affect the EPBC, NES, EIS, climate change, etc, and reports on as many of these meetings that is as humanly possible.

The rspca is to be removed from all advisory committees and as stakeholders.

Part 1-Policy and Strategic Directions

Purpose of the Strategy-What are pest animals and how are they managed?

Costs and community are mentioned, while the cost is a blowout in killing native animals, paid by taxpayers money, the majority of the community opposed kangaroo killing since 2008 when surveys were done, and yet, this majority of the community was ignored, and the kangaroo killing continued in 2011. Further the commercial harvesting of the kangaroos was widely opposed in 2004 at Googong Dam, that was also ignored.

A meeting was held with Maxine Cooper by 3 experienced interstate ecologists, including Nora Preston, Founding President of Wildlife Carers Group, in 2010, with the conclusion of the meeting not yet finalised, the kangaroo killing still continued, with demands ignored to stop the killing.

Maxine Cooper has now apparently been removed from this department, as advertised, since August, and replaced by a person who has not bothered to contact Wildlife Carers Group in order to finalise the kangaroo management investigation, that included the false grassland report, false kangaroo management plan, nature reserves, in which we now wish to add nature conservation act, and this pest animal management strategy, inhumane defence killing that incorrectly blames the kangaroos for damages and other species being driven to extinction, that the government and shooters are solely responsible for, by driving over the said areas causing damage and destruction, driving native wildlife to extinction, spraying poisons, baiting, trapping, developments, etc causing loss of habitat. All an abuse of taxpayers money.

A Canberra Times survey on the kangaroo killing had a glitch in it, giving the votes of ‘no we don’t agree to the killing’ to the ‘yes killing’, therefore was exempt to be accepted as an honest community input and poll.

Furthermore, the last comment accepted, was from tams, with this survey refusing to accept any further comments on the matter, that opposed the killing, showing discrimination and bias.

This does not show the government listening to the majority of the community, nor does the government listen to and pay the real experts, wasting and abusing taxpayers money.

Taxpayers are not prepared to pay for killing of native wildlife. Killing is unnecessary. Educate to co exist.

The current nature conservation act 1980, and the kangaroo management plan, the grasslands plan, are not acceptable, neither of which are based on any scientific evidence. The animal welfare act 1992, that allows the inhumane treatment of animals.

Before we can accept these documents, they need to be de-legislated and replaced with Wildlife Carers Group submissions.

We do not accept the changing of titles of advisory committees, and leaving the same names on the advisory committees to continue to give advice in matters that they are not experts in, which continues to allow acts of animal cruelty, and driving our wildlife to extinction through unnecessary inhumane killing and inhumane unnecessary research.

The ACT Native Flora and Fauna committee should not be the only group to be consulted in native animals, who the government think are not indigenous to the ACT, (the government has been wrong before, by naming Eastern Grey Kangaroos as introduced to the ACT, for possibly 20 years), who are not responsible for committing any damage, which the government are more than likely just using as a scaped goat for damage caused by the government, so that the government can eradicate them.

The government is wrong with their Kangaroo Management Plan, accusing Kangaroos of causing damage, when they don’t, writing up and legislating papers that are not based on any scientific evidence, therefore, we hesitate to trust the government with any allegations made against any other native species, or for the government to continue to take advice from the same people on these matters, who are constantly wrong, and causing irreparable damage.

We expect the removal of the people who are currently giving advice, and replaced with knowledgeable long term expertise people in these areas, as requested in the Wildlife Carers Group nature conservation act and the Kangaroo Management Plan submissions. We expect a big change.

If the continued outcome is falsely accusing kangaroos of being pests and causing damage, through the so called ACT high-quality tertiary education courses in pests and native animal management, with active collaboration amongst local and regional research groups to resolve knowledge gaps and management problems, then this type of education has to stop, and be replaced with the true experts, and replaced with honest education and facts.

Dishonestly claiming that kangaroos are counted before each killing is not acceptable.

Dishonestly claiming that kangaroos cause damage and drive other native species to extinction is not acceptable.

Treating any other native wildlife in the same manner, dishonestly accusing them of being over abundant, or destructive, is not acceptable.

We expect change with the government’s dishonest attitude, and the replacement of the current advisory committees as requested in Wildlife Carers Group submissions.

We expect the end of animal cruelty, and the end of the failure to provide full term rehabilitation of all sick, injured, orphaned native wildlife, with Wildlife Carers Group Wildlife Rehabilitation Licence amended as requested by Wildlife Carers Group, that is also a requirement to prevent discrimination, acts of animal cruelty, and extinction to wildlife.

We expect change and an end to animal cruelty to introduced species as well, and an understanding on what is part of the food chain, and what is really introduced.

Just because certain people don’t like something, whether it is native flora, or native fauna, doesn’t allow them to falsely claim that they are introduced, and does not allow anyone to eradicate them. Learn to co exist.

Part 2-Rationale, Issues and Implementation

Chapter 1

  1. What is a Pest Animal? – 3rd paragraph – Animal Species that are native to Australia are not considered to be pests, and do not require any management, since there is no scientific evidence to support any damage caused by native animals, with a legislation that should never have been passed, that needs to be de-legislated, and replaced with Wildlife Carers Group submissions that contains the facts.

  1. Pest Animal management

Braysher warns not to blame animals for problems, to ensure that you determine that the problems are not caused by other known factors, such as management practices or environmental influences.

This warning has been repeatedly ignored through the kangaroo management plan, the nature conservation act 1980, and the grasslands management plan, deliberately blaming native wildlife for destruction and loss of native species, that has been caused by the government and their own repeated mismanagement.

Figure 1 Summary of the strategic approach to pest animal management (Braysher and Saunders 2003)

Step 3 Assess the feasibility of a management program – states “for example, available techniques for a predatory pest may necessitate the introduction of poison baits to an area. The potential for impact on domestic pets or non-target native animal species may be unacceptable. Alternatively, available techniques may be unacceptable on animal welfare grounds”.

Time and time again, this section of pest animal management, has been breached by the agency and ACT government, with native wildlife, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, inhumanely and unnecessarily slaughtered, and foxes, Dingoes, etc, baited using poison, knowingly and unacceptably having an impact on domestic pets and non-target native animal species.

With further reports of the government declaring war on animals by blowing up their holes, warrens, dens, that is without a doubt inhumane.

These methods, blaming animals, wildlife, for damage, destruction, loss of species, etc when the government is responsible, is to end.

The government is to be totally honest to the real causes of grassland damage, loss of species, destruction, etc stating what the government has done to cause the damage, loss of species, destruction, delegislate their dishonest kangaroo management plan, nature conservation act 1980, and replace them with Wildlife Carers Group, and interstate ecologists/legal advisers submissions.

Step 5 Develop the management program, also states Only rarely is eradication a viable pest management option, with this sentence also constantly being breached.

Step 6 Implement the management program, is a concern if you are taking advice from those who have no expertise or knowledge, or who have a conflict of interest in wildlife, and are inhumane with their advice on how to eradicate animals, that are stakeholders, and land owners, farmers, etc.

Year after year, this has been a huge problem with innocent vulnerable wildlife and animals being tortured to death, because of the government’s refusal to listen to the real experts and to stop the killing, with the experts warning the government to be completely honest, and ignored.

It is necessary for changes, corrections, replacement, to ensure a totally honest government where wildlife, animals, and animal welfare are concerned.

1.2.2 Management objectives – Remove manage native animal populations that are causing unacceptable damage (Chapter 5); and ensure that the government is totally honest about exactly who is causing the damage, the government and government agency is causing the damage.

Chapter 2

Pest animal management in the ACT – A list of what is considered to be ACT Vertebrate and Invertebrate Pests is required.

Key stakeholders listed as ACT Government, Australian Government, rural landholders, pest animal researchers and especially the rspca are not experts in what are pest animals.

We have already had the problem with the ACT Government, and their ecologists writing up and legislating fraudulent papers on Kangaroos, that maintain a well balanced, healthy eco system. Their so called key stakeholders and advisory committees are driving them to extinction inhumanely, inhumane research, falsely accusing the kangaroos of damage and extinction of other species, that the government has caused, with the government failing to remove the perpetrators, and replace them with the experts.

The serious repercussions of misguided advice and documents written up by the inexperienced, with no knowledge, is never considered, and certainly cannot continue.

The rspca have to be removed from all these panels, they are not qualified, and fail to prevent inhumane acts on animals, or promote their care and protection, and rural land holders will more than likely have a conflict of interest.

No native vertebrates and invertebrates are pests, and each referral to native vertebrates and invertebrates as pests must be removed.

Being part of the food chain must be considered.

We have seen how the animal welfare advisory committee and ethics committee, works, allowing inhumane and unnecessary killing and research of native wildlife, who need to be replaced as per Wildlife Carers Group various repeated submissions.

Chapter 3

Preventing incursions of new pest animal species – While this section talks about accidental introduction of species, etc, unfortunately the government has been responsible for introducing pest species without considering the devastating outcome, or looking at the big picture, without properly researching, eg cane toads, therefore the government needs to keep their scientists under control, who continue to want to introduce invasive species into Australia, and not give in to any further invasive ideas by them.

When wildlife native to Australia suddenly turn up in the ACT, because of being chased out of their own natural habitat, should be addressed separately. Native wildlife that have no where else to go, should be welcomed, to prevent extinction of the species.

Effects of climate change – While covering the problems of climate change, and the impact it may have on introducing more species, this document does nothing to cover on how to prevent the contribution and acceleration of climate change, such as a total ban on tobacco, no further land clearing and developments, avoid over crowding, stop accusing innocent native wildlife of damage, etc that man is responsible for, and stop killing our native wildlife, all of which that maintain a healthy well balanced eco system.

Native wildlife are not pests, with all referrals to native wildlife being pests to be removed from this document.

Chapter 4 – Reducing damage by established pest animal species

While previous chapters in this document have warned against baiting, this chapter is discussing using poison baiting, and refers to native Dingoes and Kangaroos as being pests, and once again wrongfully blaming kangaroos for damage that they are not responsible for.

Pest animals first need to be assessed as to whether or not they are pests with factual statement, and of any impacts, abundance, which means individual head counting, not estimating or falsely advertising to the media and public that animals have been counted, eg, through looking at faeces, when you would be repeatedly counting the faeces from the same animal, estimating, that is not reliable, etc.

Destroying burrows, warrens could be destroying native wildlife, Echidnas, Platypus, Wombats, Dingoes.

Non invasive methods need to be used such as conventional or electric fencing, protecting high-value stock and breeding stock in stock friendly sheds and stock house friendly yards, bird netting, fish exclusion screens, guard animals in paddocks, that aren’t necessarily domestic dogs, etc.

Inhumane biological control agents need to be banned.

Inhumane poisoning, baits, fumigants, shooting commercial harvesting, rubber lined jaw traps, need to be banned.

The government and their agents would not be prepared to test the rubber lined jaw traps of safety, and not causing any harm by placing their own arms through these traps.

Native Dingoes and Kangaroos are not pests, with each referral to native wildlife as pests to be removed from this document, and not to be re introduced in a wildlife specific document that will continue to incorrectly claim native wildlife to be pests.

Non lethal methods only to be used with concerns of stock being killed by dogs. The stock are more than likely being killed by their neighbours pets that aren’t being kept under control.

How many Dingoes are there in the ACT???

Both Dingoes and Kangaroos need to be placed on the threatened species list.

Chapter 5 – Management of native animals for damage reduction

Native animals are a natural and integral part of urban, rural and conserved ecosystems and DO NOT REQUIRE MANAGEMENT FOR DAMAGE REDUCTION.

The government blame native wildlife for the government’s own human caused damage, that are mostly caused by unnecessary, inhumane management/killing of native wildlife.

Swooping magpies can not under any circumstances be removed. The magpies only swoop during nesting season, defending their young against predators. The parents work together in taking care of their young and must not be interfered with.

If the government agency is contacted about aggressive swooping magpies then erect a sign to warn the public to take an alternative route until nesting season is over, and if the warning is ignored, then the public enter the nesting site at their own risk. After the nesting season is over, the warning sign can be removed, so that the public are aware that they can resume their normal route. The added education for people to protect themselves wearing sunglasses, helmets, hats, (some people draw faces on the back of their hats or helmets to deter the swooping magpies), during the short nesting season is all adequate, to prevent any interference to the nesting magpies by the government or anyone else.

A $2000 application fee is required by anyone, including the government who applies for killing or taking (unless taking for rehabilitation), any native animals, and processed by Wildlife Carers Group. All applications for killing or taking a native animal will be properly investigated by Wildlife Carers Group.

Wildlife Carers Group will provide Proper education to anyone applying to kill native animals, to live with native animals and to use non lethal methods. Native wildlife maintains a healthy well balanced eco system. A government subsidy for protecting native wildlife and providing their suitable habitat for survival, by landowners, as opposed to killing them.

The abuse of using taxpayers money to inhumanely and unnecessarily kill native wildlife will stop, and be used to properly protect native wildlife and their habitat, and prevent them from extinction, with proper education, removing all false allegations against them.

For Kangaroo conservation in the ACT, viable population densities have NOT been determined using any available scientific knowledge of the species biology, ecology and population dynamics. The government repeatedly falsify their reports on population, damage, loss of native species, legislated a kangaroo management plan that was not based on any scientific evidence, and have ruthlessly been inhumanely driving the species to extinction, interfering with their habitat by destroying their habitat with over development.

The government has wasted taxpayers money on inhumanely killing our native kangaroos, at the brink of driving them to extinction. With no full term rehabilitation in the ACT for sick, injured, orphaned native Eastern Grey Kangaroos, the government has been further wasting tax payers money on sending their ecologist interstate, to spread their lies about the kangaroos, that they have fed to the ACT public and media, attempting to encourage the rest of Australia to assist in driving the species to extinction, and not to provide full term rehabilitation for sick, injured, orphaned Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

Wildlife Carers Group will be the specific stakeholder and adviser on Kangaroos and the rest of the native wildlife.

This chapter refers to management of native animals for damage reduction has been undertaken for Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Wild Dogs, which are Dingoes, but the government isn’t sure if these Dingoes are pure breed anymore, possums, magpies, venomous snakes in the ACT.

We are requesting a response on what type of management has been undertaken on these species.

Possums are extremely territorial and cannot be moved, if they are in rooves, etc, a possum box must be erected near the area they have been removed from, so they have a home. It would be best to place the possum box in the roof where the possum is living, to allow the possum’s scent in the box and hopefully the possum will crawl into the box, and then reposition the box into the nearby tree, or garage, however, first check the tree or garage you are placing the box in through the day, to make sure there isn’t already a resident possum in it.

Ensure that you block off the area where the possum has been removed from to prevent the possum from moving back in.

We’ve already covered the magpies, they cannot be moved, they will be killed if moved to another area. The public will just have to learn to live with the magpies and take the precautions as already covered.

Venomous snakes will also be territorial for food etc, so be careful you aren’t moving them into another snakes territory and cause it’s death.

Dingoes have also been covered.

Noise and light deterrents are inhumane, as witnessed when used, the exhausted flying foxes and young return to roost after feeding all night, and then interfered with, not allowed to stop and rest, drop out of the sky, fall into water, drown, the young and adults die a horrific death.

The public are going to have to learn to live with native flying foxes.

It is not feasible to drive our wildlife to extinction because of lack of education and understanding of native wildlife and their importance to our eco system.

Native wildlife listed and incorrectly accused of being pests that cause damage are, Dingo/wild dog, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Sulphur crested Cockatoos/White cockatoos, Wombats, Pied Currawong.

If there are more native wildlife on the list, then please inform us.

Native Wildlife are not pests with all referrals to native species as being pests to be removed.

Chapter 6 – Awareness, understanding, coordination and capacity building

This chapter mentions opinion polls on kangaroo management. The last opinion poll run in the Canberra Times in 2011 had a glitch in it. As we clicked on NO we do not agree with the cull, we watched the Yes percentage increase. We found that this poll was a bias and discriminating poll, that shut down after tams comment, disallowing any further comments to be made. This poll cannot be counted. Last year’s poll, 2010, showed that the majority opposed kangaroo killing, and yet it still continued, and again this year. In 2004 we saw the unnecessary inhumane killing of kangaroos for the commercial industry at googong dam. Click or copy and paste these links into your browser, that shows the inhumane industry and the fact that kangaroo meat is not fit for pet or human consumption: https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2011/09/04/wildlife-carers-group-kangaroo-meat-testing-%e2%80%93-5-day-work-experience-student-4-8-july-2011/?sn=l; ‘KANGAROOS AND DISEASES’, https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2011/08/04/kangaroos-and-diseases-notes-for-5-day-wes-4-8-july-2011/?sn=l

The kangaroo management plan and the Nature Conservation Act 1980 must be de legislated and replaced with Wildlife Carers Group’s submissions.

To see Wildlife Carers Group full 5-day report, of the training with the work experience student, Wildlife Carers Group Kangaroo Meat Testing, results: contaminated, etc Please click on this link https://wildlifecarersgroup.wordpress.com/2011/08/04/wildlife-carers-group-wcg-visit-to-callum-brae-nature-reserve-etc-full-5-day-work-experience-student-wes-placement-report-trained-by-wcg-founding-president-nora-preston-4-8-july-2011/?sn=l.
This species maintains a healthy well balanced eco system.

Stakeholder meetings cannot be restricted and privatised to landholders who want to kill native animals, experts/Wildlife Carers Group, need to be involved to investigate, and educate those who are applying to kill native wildlife.

Training courses provided by institutions have to ensure that they are not training students with false information, unnecessarily building up hatred, as the kangaroos are being targeted by teaching utter rubbish about them.

Aerial shooting is not accurate, inhumane and to be banned.

1080 poison is inhumane, to be banned.

I’m certain that the horse lovers would love to be given free horses, rather than killing them.

Native species, Eastern Grey Kangaroos have no negative impact on conservation, production values, fences can be repaired, driving wombats and kangaroos to extinction for fences is hardly viable. Currawongs are being blamed for spreading weed and predation of nestlings, all birds of prey, including magpies are predators for nestlings, Currawongs will not be discriminated against. The government will have to liaise with experts/Wildlife Carers Group and get their facts straight. Currawongs are blamed for spreading weeds, and called pests. People are spreading weeds every time they walk, run, jog, what are you going to do about the people. People have a far more deadly impact on the environment that any bird or animal.

Non lethal methods to be used to protect crops, and to share with native wildlife.

There is a lot of inhumane methods in this document that need to be removed, with humane non lethal methods looked at.

The removal of all referrals of native wildlife as being pests is required.

You can help us make the necessary changes for our native protected Eastern Grey Kangaroos, by signing this petition, and circulating this for us www.gopetition.com/petitions/saveallthe-kangaroos.html.

UPDATE 3 CYGNETS 2 SWANS DRIVE CAREFULLY; WILDLIFE RESCUE; KANGAROO – TINNED PET FOOD

NEWS ALERT – UPDATE – ACT 3 CYGNETS HATCHED, DRIVE CAREFULLY

On Sunday 2 October 2011, Wildlife Carers Group checked on the cygnets that have now hatched, following the reports from 16/9/11, of the pair of Black Swans nesting in the pond that is in the middle of the large roundabout, heading up to the Reid CIT and the Convention Centre.

We counted 3 cygnets, with the 2 Black Swans still busily building up their nest, adding more twigs to their large nest.

Swans lose their flight feathers during moulting, and are unable to fly during the moulting season.

Please drive very carefully to avoid hitting the swans and their cygnets, should they decide to move across the busy roads to get to the park near the lake.

Photos taken by NORA PRESTON

Remember, All native wildlife are very vulnerable, with no road sense, and they need your help to prevent any road fatalities, to give way to all wildlife, to keep your eyes out for all native wildlife, and to drive carefully, slowly, to avoid hitting any of our protected, valuable wildlife.

WILDLIFE RESCUE

Wildlife Carers Group has received interesting phone calls, from Crocodiles to Serpents.

On Sunday 2/10/11, one of our calls was for a rosella in a cupboard.

When we arrived, we were taken to the caller’s bedroom, where she pointed to the cupboard.

I opened up the cupboard door, and found a Crimson Rosella sitting on top of the water heater.

With it being such a miserable wet day, the bird was certainly snug, dry and warm.

I asked the caller to close her bedroom door to prevent the parrot from flying out through the rest of the house, as the rosella flew out of the cupboard.

I quickly caught the bird, placed her into my cat carrier, and asked the caller to take us to the same area where the cupboard was, to release the bird.

We could hear the Rosella’s partner calling out for her, with the possibility that they were nesting, and had young close by.

As soon as I opened up the cat carrier, the rosella flew straight out to her partner.

I advised the caller to block off the area where the bird flew in from, to avoid the bird from flying back into her water heater cupboard.

Use either a thick towel or a bird net to rescue birds.

Throw the towel over the birds, pick them up and place them straight into a newspaper lined box or cat carrier, that you need to have ready, beside the rescue area, before attempting to rescue wildlife, so you can immediately place the rescued wildlife straight into the box or cat carrier, and secure the wildlife in the container.

Using a bird net can be easier, that you place straight over the bird, before it can fly around, and possibly injure themselves.

Larger birds would need to have blankets thrown over them to rescue them, or larger bird nets that don’t have handles.

The report is by Julie Lindner, who has also been studying the grasslands and the roos for the past 20 years, which backs up what I’ve been saying all along.

Please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZrKj6ClBg ‘KANGAROO CHILLER BOX INVESTIGATION’/’KANGAROOS ON TRACK TO EXTINCTION’, that contains the cruel bashing to death of roos that are shot, but not directly killed, hung up while still alive, and left suffering, trembling as they hang, tortured to death, and joeys bashed to death, possibly attempting to decapitate the joeys head on the back of the truck with several blows.

Possum Abattoir – Lenah Game Meats, Tasmania — EngageMedia

These animals are still alive and awake, when going through the abattoir’s chute processing system, dropped on top of one another, through a swinging door, to go through to the next phase, with several possums piled on top of one another, into the same boxes, when delivered to the abattoir, (possums are extremely territorial,) females with joeys, butchered, and bashed to death. Please Help stop these extreme acts of animal cruelty and export. Dingoes

Following Wildlife Carers Group Investigation and Report on the Fraser Island Dingoes, on 29/8/11, on 5/9/11, the Liberal National Party (LNP) has committed to ensuring the long term survival of the Fraser Island Dingoes, click this link to read the LNP’s commitments: http://www.lnp.org.au/policies/queenslands-precious-wildlife-the-fraser-island-dingo.
